Hi Aliyah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hey! My name is Aliyah or Chef Li. I started my business Sunflower Kitchen on a whim. I had been a culinary specialist in the US Army for about 5 years and grew to really enjoy and love the art of cooking and all things food. Prior to starting the business, I would always cook and post pictures of my food on social media and would get tons of feedback about how it looked and ask if I offered cooking lessons or a cookbook or even if I would sell plates. I would tell my husband about it and he gave me the final push and said, just do it! So I did. I started the business around April 2021 after giving birth to my 3rd child. It started pretty small just selling charcuterie boxes and floral cupcakes for Mothers Day and has since expanded to catering small intimate events as a private chef and bigger events up to 200 people, offering meal preparations and giving nutrition recommendations for customers with diet restrictions and I have even launched a few products.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been challenging at times. I struggled in the beginning until I got some support. It was very frustrating the first few months because of the lack of support and I had decided to give up BUT after some friends and family and a few loyal supporters began to ask questions, I realized that people did notice and even though it was not what I expected, it was a start.

I brand myself as a private chef who does it all! Anything you ask for, I try to provide. One of my most sought-after meals is my brunch spread and my very colorful and well-plated meal preps. What sets me apart from others is that I will cater to the needs of any and everyone. I will not turn a customer away just because they ask for something not in my “set menus”, I make it happen. It’s important for me that my customers always eat good, are mindful of what they are eating, and the food looks and smells good.
