Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda & Jason Mazzo.
Hi Amanda & Jason, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When we met in 2011, we were both creative freelancers; Jason specializes in videography and photography, while I (Amanda) am a visual artist/graphic designer.
Nashville has been through a substantial amount of change in the past 20+ years, and with that we’ve noticed trends in the creative landscape. A lot of our friends began opting for freelance lifestyles over traditional office careers which led us to consider building a creative collective; a hub for creatives like us that would allow us to bolster our offerings and take on larger projects.
We soon drafted a plan offering B2B creative marketing starting with our complementary services and our company, Mazzo Media was born. Over the last five years, we’ve been fortunate to grow and serve clients in a variety of industries nationwide.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
What road doesn’t have a few bumps?
Everyone hears about work/life balance, but this is a true challenge for partners in business and marriage! Before securing an office location, we prioritized setting boundaries in our home (i.e., work upstairs, personal life downstairs) and our calendars (weekends are for rest), and focused on learning The Art of Communication. (Step 1: Listen First. Step 2: See step 1.)
Although, the biggest hurdle was shifting our brains from functioning as sole creatives to wearing multiple hats as business owners. We learned very quickly to play to our own strengths and start working with professionals who excel in places we don’t. These business expenses have been well worth it!
2020 was another struggle no one saw coming (or even how to navigate through it). So many of our services centered around in-person meetings, but we were forced to pivot everything to virtual – even in videography! All the extra work for a successful offering of interactive elements engaging global audiences and reliable live-streaming for our clients’ virtual events, made it that much more satisfying in the end.
As you know, we’re big fans of Mazzo Media. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Mazzo Media is an award-winning creative studio in East Nashville focusing on videography, photography, graphic design, and social media content.
We are creative problem-solvers who come alongside teams to create content that better tells the story of who they are, where they’ve been, and where they’re going. One of our favorite projects involves sitting down with organizations to film unscripted conversations that convey the heart of who they are and why they do what they do.
We love hearing about the creative challenges an organization is facing as much as opportunities to create something that sets them apart! We thrive as tandem creative partners brainstorming and dreaming up unconventional ideas from a fresh perspective.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
CEO & Founder of Career Thrivers and fellow Nashville entrepreneur, Brittany N. Cole says ‘rest’ is a top leadership quality and we couldn’t agree more! She uses the STOP acronym reminder: Sit still, Think it through, Openly observe, and Proceed with purpose. We believe that resting is essential to fill our own cups so we can continue pouring into others.
Otherwise, we’ve always prioritized giving back to the community, so it felt important to carry this value into our company. One of our favorite local organizations to support is Daybreak Arts (formerly Poverty & the Arts) – a social enterprise nonprofit that creates artistic and economic opportunities for people experiencing housing insecurity by providing them access to the creative resources needed to achieve personal fulfillment and success.
We are a proud, 5-time returning sponsors of their annual fundraiser and when Amanda completed The 100-Day Project, Mazzo Media hosted an art show and donated 100% of the purchases (over $3,000!) to Daybreak Arts.
