Hi Amber, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
A shocking number of people experience injustice in the criminal legal system, and I wanted to help as many of those people as possible.
I was a criminal investigator at the Metro Nashville Public Defender’s Office for nearly seven years and the work I did there is what led me to start my private practice, AK Investigations, in 2010. I started the business with a single murder case and the goal of expanding my casework to help as many clients as possible. I just celebrated 20 years of doing this work in 2023!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The business started with just me, and in 13 years has grown into a robust team of multiple talented investigators spread out between two office locations in Nashville, TN and Louisville, KY. We are licensed in Tennessee, Kentucky, Kansas, and Missouri, but our work takes us all over the country and we travel wherever we need to for our clients.
This year, we are branching out into exciting new directions that we’ve been brewing up for several years now. First, we’ll be launching the first comprehensive private investigator training program for organizations and agencies to train their in-house investigators. There’s nothing that exists like this, so we’re confident it’s going to be a game-changer for the industry.
We will also be launching online private investigation courses to the public, which I’m excited about. So many people want to learn how to be a private investigator, but there’s not a lot of reliable education out there. So with our courses, anyone who has an interest in becoming a private investigator can learn those skills from some of the most experienced investigators working in the field today. We’re a full-service investigative agency that offers an array of customized services to our clients. The majority of our clients are civil and criminal defense attorneys who hire us to help their team on specific cases. We work on both state and federal cases.

What do you think about happiness?
My biggest success is building a team of smart, dedicated, and skilled investigators. Without my team, none of the incredible achievements we’ve had would be possible. We all show up every day to help people, to walk alongside them through the most difficult parts of their lives, and to fight for them, and that’s a dream come true for me. Our team continues to grow, so we can help more clients in need.
Our work has helped countless people avoid inhumane amounts of prison time, helped them avoid the death penalty, or helped prove they are not guilty. Navigating a broken system and making sure our clients have a thorough investigation is tough work, but I couldn’t imagine being happier doing anything else. I’m grateful for what we’ve been able to build so far, and I look forward to what the future holds.
