Meet Annie Lynn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Lynn.

Hi Annie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My motto is “Make it an adventure!” My songwriting journey so far has definitely been an adventure, like how I first learned to play guitar a few years ago from an old cassette tape my Dad gave me… To decide to ditch that and quickly sign myself up for a local community ed beginning guitar course… Then only six months later driving down to Nashville to see if I could play at an open mic night at the Bluebird Cafe. I called over 60 times to get in, but I got a spot! That was the first open mic I’d ever done. I played the first song I ever wrote called “Carry On,” which is a song I wrote about my Grandma. It was an amazing experience.

I’ll never forget it. I also recorded “Carry On” at the Ryman Auditorium the next day as a part of a tour package.

Since then, I’ve re-recorded it and released it as my very first single. Today I’ve gone on to write and release more original music available everywhere you listen to music under my artist name Annie Lynn. My latest, called “Back in the Saddle” is the most country-sounding song I’ve done so far.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin, but immediately after high school, I moved to the Twin Cities area of Minnesota to study and perform musical theatre. I’ve been singing, dancing, and acting ever since I was a little girl. I went from singing with my Dad and making my own shows in my basement with my sisters and cousins… we were called “The Cadillac Cousins,” to eventually performing in lots of shows! I went through a period of time though where I kinda stopped singing and was feeling stuck creatively. But I was eventually pulled back to it after picking up a songwriting book from a used bookstore. I began combining my other love of writing with music.

Although the craft of songwriting, playing guitar, and singing at the same time is still fairly new for me, it feels like it’s exactly where I’m supposed to be. I’m very comfortable and most “at home” when I’m on stage in front of an audience singing. I recently moved back to Wisconsin and now live in a small town near where I grew up. During the pandemic, I streamed my live performances, some of which were back in my unfinished basement, like when I was a kid. I still like to practice down there, and it’s where I film a lot of my YouTube videos.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve always been a performer and I love to entertain an audience. I have often been told I have a natural stage presence. I’m constantly working on adding new skills to my repertoire too, for instance, I’m currently learning the ukulele. I love to connect through writing my “Annie’s Adventure” pen-pal letters (emails) folks can sign up to receive on my website called the Annie Lynn Club. I send it out every other Friday, giving updates on what projects I’m working on in a fun and engaging, personalized way.

I also provide exclusive access to a free acoustic album of the songs I’ve released, and a “members only” area on my blog where I have what I call a micro-museum. This includes more personal stories I’ve curated about my journey and growing up. It’s nostalgic, and really a sneak peek into where I get ideas for lyrics for the songs I’m writing. If I were to describe the genre I write in, I’d say kinda a folksy-pop Americana. A lot of my music is really upbeat, positive, singable, and catchy.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
You’ve just gotta keep going, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, try your best, and adjust to new things: “Make it an adventure!”
