Today we’d like to introduce you to Antionette Booker.
Antionette, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey as a serial entrepreneur began at The University of Memphis, where I had the opportunity to lead in different capacities through on-campus organizations and in my sorority – Alpha Kappa Alpha.
In addition, I had the opportunity to participate in five different internships which gave me a sneak peek into the work that I would eventually do in Corporate America and as a serial entrepreneur.
There was one particular internship that shaped me into the businesswoman that I am today. At one point, I was the Marketing Manager at The Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation under the leadership of Kelly Penwell at the time. Kelly taught me the ins and outs of running a business…
That is where I discovered my passion for helping small businesses.
In that role, I was responsible for devising marketing and business plans for clients. For me, it was bigger than creating these plans, it was an opportunity for me to help small business owners put together the pieces of the puzzle.
From that point on, I knew that my purpose was to help entrepreneurs eliminate barriers in their businesses. Over time, I also realized that I had a gift of helping people make the right connections. Once I recognized my gifts, I went on to create multiple businesses that would allow me to tap into these spaces.
As a result, I started Brand Me Glamorous, where I help aspiring female entrepreneurs easily start their own businesses from scratch, and Her Complexion Network which is focused on helping women of color make the right connections at the right time.
Living paycheck to paycheck was not an option for me. I never wanted to rely on one stream of income to pay my bills and/or provide for my family. So now, I teach other women how to do the same.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say that being a serial entrepreneur has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges that I faced early on as entrepreneur was connecting with my target audience. Naturally, I am an introvert, so being in front of people…especially strangers were not something that I ever wanted to do, but I knew that I had to do it if I wanted to connect with my target audience and make money in my business. I tell my clients’ all the time that people do business with people they like and trust. How can anyone get to know you while you hide behind your business? It is not possible.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Her Complexion is an exclusive global network for women of color. Our mission is to educate, connect, and inspire women of color to give back to their communities, create generational wealth through entrepreneurship, and take up space in Corporate America.
Every month, we host “members-only” masterclasses, hands-on workshops, and/or live interviews with subject matter experts. We are laser-focused on creating a platform for women of color to be expressive in a world where we are often forced to be silent.
Although our events cater to women of color, our membership is open to all women.
We recently launched our sister company – Her Complexion Travel Agency, a boutique agency, where we offer personalized travel concierge services.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the fact that Nashville still has a southern charm to it no matter how big it grows. As someone who was born and raised in Nashville, TN. I’ve had the opportunity to watch this city change throughout the years. It feels good to know that I can still grab food at a local restaurant and run into someone that I know.
The one thing that I like least about our city is the gentrification that has taken place. Gentrification has significantly increased the cost of homes throughout the city. Nashville is not affordable to live in anymore. You have to live on the outskirts of the city just to find a good bang for your buck.
