Meet Asher Postman of Madison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Asher Postman.

Hi Asher, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started making music in the basement of my parent’s farmhouse in Michigan. I was 15 at the time and still in homeschool. I was so obsessed with making sounds on my computer and spent most of my free time doing that throughout my teen years. Right from the beginning, I was shooting high to try and get my sound to the level of my first influences (Avicii, Zedd, Madeon, etc.) I started posting videos of my music in various forms on YouTube, and some of my videos went viral (mostly videos of me turning meme videos into songs). My traction on the internet caught the attention of music industry folk, and I was able to quit my painting job and start making full-time music by the age of 19. When I was 21, I moved to Nashville to expand my career and be more involved in the music community!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Pursuing a music career has a lot of ups and downs. I was an independent musician. One of the biggest challenges can be keeping people’s attention and getting them to care about what I release—especially nowadays with an over saturation of content on the internet. I often have to keep a tight reign on my emotions to keep myself from wrapping my identity in the success of my work. It can be very challenging to keep the joy of music when you feel like you have to “feed the content beast” and treat your art like a business. But I’ve been able to navigate it and enjoy my work! It helps a lot to have close friends in Nashville who are in the same field as me navigating it together!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I pride myself on making music that pushes the boundaries sonically. I started making EDM music because the sounds fascinate me, and then I shifted to pop music because of how the melodies and lyrics make me feel. So I seek to provide a unique fusion of honest, catchy pop vocals mixed with forward-thinking EDM production. My fans expect to hear something that will make them think, “how did you do that?” when they see a new release from me. I also like to make breakdown videos on my youtube channel, so other producers can see how I did things! Many fans have told me that I taught them how to produce from my videos, so that’s been cool to see.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some changes you expect to see over the next five to ten years?
I’ve seen the industry change a lot since I started making music 10 years ago. It’s been weird to see how much content you’re expected to make these days to get people to see your music. I think there could be a correction from that eventually because I think people will get sick of sorting through hundreds of videos & songs every day. I hope to see people return to picking fewer artists they enjoy and paying more attention to everything they do.
