Meet Bewindi Jackson of Memphis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bewindi Jackson

Hi Bewindi, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I did not embrace the idea of counseling – perhaps more importantly the ministry of counseling until later on in college towards grad school. I knew that I liked helping people and listening to their problems but I did try to run away- specifically by majoring in computer information systems in college- let’s just say that did not go too well. Ha! The registrar encouraged me to change my major. I then stopped running and embarked on a masters of social work degree at Washington University- George Warren Brown School of Social work in St. Louis, Missouri. Post masters, I was ‘baptised by fire’ with my work experience- fresh out of grad school at Youth Villages where I was now a residential counselor providing individual, group and family counseling, facilitating treatment teams, treatment plans and discharge plans- I did not feel prepared but the experience of work prepared me furthermore as I had consultation and supervision. The more I practiced, and served, the more competent and confident I became- I then knew I wanted more and pursued my license- LCSW and I conquered in 2010. I worked at additional jobs in additional roles and then established my private practice in November of 2017. In 2020, the Lord led me to jump into private practice full time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road- navigating the work and the preparation to take the standardized test/ license. It has been stressful at times navigating case loads.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I provide therapy to professionals, young adults who are struggling with emotional conflicts, such as depression, anxiety, unhappiness, stress and negative thinking patterns and she works with them to help develop a better perspective so that they can walk in freedom. I love working with people who are motivated and want to address thinking patterns, negative coping patterns, replace problematic behaviors and help them to align with God’s word particularly when providing christian counseling. I love to serve couples who want to improve the quality of their marriage and relationship and christians who also struggle with mental health and their faith. I also provide Christ-centered counseling and absolutely love to assist people in moving from a place of disempowerment to empowerment and discouragement to encouragement.

I host the podcast, Empowered to Empower You- all things Jesus and mental health and wellness and each episode is packed with information, inspiration and insight. I am also the published author of books, Empowerment for You: Encouragement for your Spiritual and Emotional Wellness and Empowerment for You Reflection Workbook.I love to train and empower others by sharing knowledge and leaving them feeling uplifted. I am very passionate about training on topics such as engagement, stress, burnout and selfcare, faith and mental health related topics. I am powered by my values of faith in Jesus, service, fun, freedom and empowerment.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was very serious, and engaged in school. I was not a very happy girl as I navigated low self esteem, and depression, as well as suicidal thoughts due to feelings of worthlessness and depression.
