Meet Billy Harvey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Billy Harvey.

Hi Billy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
To make a looooooong story short… I started playing guitar when I was 11. I was in bands all through my 20s and had a couple of record deals. I have always made my own demos of songs – from the old four track tape recorders to the ADAT machines of the 90s, and ultimately right here on these computers. A lot of friends over the years have asked me to record their music, and finally after a few hundred instances of this, I started accepting the title “Producer”.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a battle. Except for brief moments of success, pursuing music as a living is terrifying. I lived in my van when I first moved to California. Painted houses, landscaped, worked as a roofer, toured as a roadie for the Old 97s once. Basically, I did anything I could to buy enough time to sustain my chances at being a musician.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have always worn many hats as an OG DIYer. I write songs and put out my own records – just released my 10th “Bullseye”. I produce records for other artists (Suzie Brown, Charlie Mars, Bob Schneider, Steve Poltz, Crystal Bowersox, etc…). I make music videos for myself and other artists. I write music for television with my crazy talented friend Eddie Wohl. Sounds funny, but what I think sets me apart is my ability to listen. Not to music but to what people are trying to convey to me. Often times it’s difficult for an artist to articulate the music and ideas that are swimming in their head, so I listen with all my senses and long enough to get to the true place with them. What I am really excited about right now is a rock band I started with my friends Brett Scallions (original singer for Fuel) and Eddie Wohl (mentioned earlier). We just signed a deal with Golden Robot records out of Australia and my fingers are crossed for a release later this year.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Tenacity. Work ethic. Sense of humor.
