Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheyna Matthews.
Hi Cheyna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was a little girl from Clayton County, Georgia with Jamaican roots who fell in love with the game of soccer. That passion led me to play competitively at a young age, and eventually carried me to the collegiate level at Vanderbilt University, which is what first brought me to Nashville — before I transferred to Florida State University after two seasons. I had continued success at Florida State, winning the first National Championship in program history and became closer to pursuing my dream of playing professionally.
I was later drafted 7th overall into the National Women’s Soccer League and went on to play professionally for nine years. During that time, I experienced some of the highest moments of my career, including participation in an NWSL championship run and 2 FIFA Women’s World Cups with the Jamaica Women’s National Team.
What made that journey especially unique was becoming a mother during my playing career. I had all three of my children while playing professionally and returned to the field after each birth, which is something that was almost unheard of at the time. Balancing motherhood, recovery, and elite competition required tremendous discipline, and wellness became a huge part of my lifestyle both on and off the field.
My husband also played professional football for 11 years, so recovery and longevity were priorities for both of us throughout our careers. We explored many different recovery modalities, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy became one we consistently relied on. We believed in it so much that we eventually invested in a chamber for our own home.
In retirement, we decided we wanted to help others prioritize healing, recovery, and wellness the same way we had throughout our careers. That passion led us to co-found Hyperbaric House and Wellness in Brentwood, Tennessee.
We’ve only been open for about three months, but it has already been incredibly rewarding. Being able to build something meaningful together as co-founders while helping people feel better, recover stronger, and improve their overall wellness has been a blessing for our family.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Having my kids during a playing career was definitely challenging. Navigating motherhood in an environment that required me to be at the top of my game mentally and physically was tough to navigate at times. I would not change that experience for the world because I think it’s helped expand my mind and help my mentality navigating business ownership and showing up to perform the best I can in that space.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a wellness and recovery center that is hyperbaric oxygen therapy focused. We also offer red light therapy and IV hydration.
Any big plans?
Definitely the biggest change is starting this journey in the wellness space and continuing to navigate the systems and flow.
