Meet Christian Walker of Antioch, TN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Walker.

Hi Christian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in a musical family, out of Memphis, Tennessee, I can say that my destiny was already planned. At the tender age of 2 years old, I picked up my first pair of drumsticks. My older brother was my first drum teacher. In the 6th grade, I woke up one random morning and started singing; nothing that I planned on doing. But when your mother and father meet in the college choir and produce offspring, this is what happens. Music and ministry both found their way into our family DNA. While singing was not the initial thing I wanted to do, just like a calling, it’s not something you can run from. Left up to my mother, I didn’t have a choice whether to sing or not; and years later I’m so grateful for the choice I didn’t have. Both playing drums and singing have shaped the career I’m able to work in today. After losing my full time job in May 2022, I took a leap of faith and went full time music. Luckily for me, relationships were established prior. It has not been an easy journey to say the least. Everyday is still a walk of faith, but I have no regrets. It’s been the scariest yet most fulfilling career path I could make. And I believe I’m just only getting started…

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Full time music is not exactly a walk in the park. In this industry, it works just like any other company. Peak season is hot, dry seasons are very slow. You just learn how to manage what you can and when you can.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Full time music. I am a professional drummer and vocalist; that includes lead singing, background vocals, vocal arranger & producer. I would honestly say I do both equally the same. Even when I’m singing, in my mind I’m still playing drums. It’s the same gift. I would say I’m more widely known for singing because that has the most visibility. However, there are a lot of people that still don’t know I sing because they knew me as a drummer first. I’m proud of myself in the fact that I’ve been able to weave in and out all of gifts and talents, and nothing lacks on either side; even in multiple genres. I believe what sets me apart from others is that my personality actually comes out in my gifts. How I approach singing and playing drums is like one big hug. I strive for it to feel good, inviting, be solid and passionate.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
While Gospel music is probably the field I work in the most, I actually enjoy and pull more inspiration from other genres of music. R&B, soul, country, jazz, alternative, hip-hop, etc. My Apple replay playlists probably have more R&B in it than anything.
