Today we’d like to introduce you to Chuck Thompson.
Hi Chuck, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a rare Nashville native, raised in the Rosebank neighborhood until my family moved to an area just south of Whites Creek. After high school at Goodpasture, I attended Austin Peay State University to study pre-med. Realizing that the medical profession was not for me, I enrolled in Belmont University to complete my degree.
Although not a musician, singer, or songwriter, music has always been a passion in my life. While attending Belmont, I applied for an internship at a brand-new music PR firm. My experience there helped me realize that I could use my business talents to help others achieve their musical dreams and, in turn, be part of the process. My internship evolved into a full-time PR role, driving early media campaigns for notable artists such as David Allan Coe, George Strait, and The Flying Burrito Brothers.
Transitioning to artist management, I worked with acts including The Judds, Wynonna, Billy Dean, McBride & The Ride, Pirates Of The Mississippi, and Carl Perkins. I also played a key role in establishing Pro Tours, an artist booking and sponsorship agency that coordinated branded tours across North America with corporate partners such as GMC Trucks, Liberty Optical, and The Sara Lee Corporation.
In 1995, I joined the RCA Label Group/Nashville as Director of Media Relations & Artist Development. There, I helped launch the careers of Kenny Chesney, Lonestar, and Mindy McCready through the new BNA imprint, and led strategic NASCAR partnerships with sponsors such as Little Caesars Pizza and Kmart.
A year later, I founded the Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC with a guiding ethos: “Where music still has A Heart and A Soul.” Through innovative brand-building and long-term artist development strategies, we have been fortunate to work with an eclectic roster that has included Danni Leigh, Ricochet, Maiden Dixie, Thom Shepherd, Michelle Wright, and Bob Bender, host of The Business Side of Music podcast.
The firm has also spearheaded dynamic partnerships and marketing campaigns for clients such as Entertainment Media Corporation, Waffle House, and Thunder Productions—producing a multistate motorcycle rally sponsored by Harley-Davidson and others. The rally culminated in a Montgomery Gentry concert at Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach.
I expanded my offerings to artists under the Navigator Records imprint, releasing independent projects and reviving classic works. Notably, Navigator’s collaboration with Michelle Wright led to a deal with BFD/Audium Nashville and the release of her newest studio album, Milestone, along with five remastered titles.
Our current roster/client list includes Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame Recording Artist Michelle Wright, husband-and-wife duo Rosewood Ave, and Tim Brink & The Rising, with projects for singer-songwriter Jeff Batson, young pop sensation Farah Camille, and The Great Canadian Roadtrip concert tour.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have been fortunate in my career, learning my craft from some of the best creative and business minds in this industry. It has always been a challenge to take what I have learned and anchor it in innovation, integrity, and a deep reverence for artistry, to guide myself and my clients.
Keeping up with a changing industry and rebuilding my business after the two-year COVID shutdown has had its share of serious ups and downs. But every time I am lucky enough to see an artist’s face when they hear their song on the radio for the first time, or when they step onto a big stage in front of an enthusiastic crowd, I cannot imagine doing anything else.
We’ve been impressed with Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC/Navigator Records, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC is an entertainment management firm encompassing artist development, marketing, and public relations. Each artist/client/project comes to us with a unique set of strengths and needs. We pride ourselves on the ability to review what has been built, make adjustments, and create a plan and team to move to the next step, always with an eye on the end goal.
When what we needed for our clients was not available, we opened our label, Navigator Records, to tailor a release to each project.
I feel a certain amount of responsibility to each of our artists/clients/projects. It is a daily reminder that the people we are fortunate to work with are pursuing their dreams. Our goal is to be a trustworthy, committed, and caring co-pilot, always mindful that we represent a creative spirit.
How do you think about luck?
Luck has played a significant role in who I am and where I am today.
– I was lucky to realize that medicine was not a career for me.
– I was lucky to stop and read a posting for an internship on a Belmont bulletin board.
– I am so incredibly lucky to have a wonderful family that gives me balance.
My luck has taught me a cornerstone concept that I try to impart to every artist, client, or project I have worked with since opening the doors of the Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC: “Put yourself in a position that, when you are lucky enough to get the right opportunity, you are ready to step forward.”
