Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Uhls.
Hi Cody, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been a photographer for almost 10 years. During the pandemic, I worked for a music tech company called KIT Plugins, creating all of their photo, video, and graphic design content. We contracted a 3D artist to create all our products in 3D, and that was the first time I realized it could be a career option. He sent me the 3D product images, and I kept bothering him asking for the product to be in a certain angle, or a certain POV – and I decided to learn how to create them in 3D myself. After countless hours on YouTube learning the 3D software, at the time using a software called Cinema4D, I started creating all of the content for the company in 3D. I also began creating the products themselves. After a few years of working for that KIT Plugins, I stepped away in 2023 and started my own business, Daisy House Studios – a 3D creative studio specializing in product design and architecture renderings.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was and still is incredibly challenging. It’s not the most well-known industry, so explaining the work to people and the value of the work has always been a challenge. I have begun creating videos on my social media to explain what I do and why it can help a business. Some people just believe that standard photography or video services are the way to go, and I am trying to show this other option that provides more flexibility. The example I always give to people are Apple iPhone commercials. I can create your product in 3D and make it look like it’s just a studio photo or video of your physical product.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a 3D artist specializing in product design and architecture renderings. I wouldn’t say I’m “known” for anything yet, but I am proud of my work with breweries, including Jackalope Brewery and Bero Brewing. I’m also proud of my architecture work, which I create to look like a real-life photograph. What sets me apart would be my photography background. I have a degree in Media and Entertainment with a concentration in photography from Middle Tennessee State University – so I have an understanding of lighting, composition, and just general photography knowledge that allows me to create more lifelike imagery in 3D.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
YouTube is how I learned all of my 3D knowledge. I wouldn’t have been able to start my business without it. I didn’t go to school for 3D, and I knew absolutely nothing about the software out there. I would say the channels I consistently go back and learn from are “Ducky 3D”, “Thomas Colin 3D”, and “Derek Elliot”.
