Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Shepardson.
Hi Colin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Orlando, FL. Growing up I took part in numerous community activities like distributing meals with the Orlando coalition for the homeless and volunteering with best buddies in school. I attended Auburn University and did several internships with the general contractor Brasfield & Gorrie building sites for Lockheed Martin and the Atlanta Braves. While working with B&G I spent time volunteering with Make a Wish helping families in the Atlanta area.
I learned a great deal through that work but ultimately wanted more, I founded JD in order to help a new community in Nashville. During my time running a business there I learned a great deal and have had the opportunity to help hundreds of families by furnishing homes, distributing clothes, and providing books and bikes to young kids in Nashville. I plan to continue these efforts and grow my business in my hometown and in communities all over the country. We have recently rebranded the name to Robinhood Removal and you can check us out on social media @Robinhoodcares.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Good things never come easy. I’ve faced my fair share of difficult moments in my life but in the end, I’m better for having gone through them. Adversity builds character, it is a part of life, and the more you face it the more you learn how to deal with new challenges.
Like many people, I’ve dealt with bullies in school, heartbreak, financial issues, and other problems we all have to get through as human beings but in the end, those moments are what make me the man I am today. While running my business in Music city I encountered hundreds of people in need, and at times it became overwhelming.
The recipients I would work with often needed more help than I could provide, people would tell me about their mental illnesses, ask me for food, tell me to help their children, and as much as I have tried to help there’s only so much a 24-year-old kid can do. Those difficult situations taught me how to manage myself and others, and how to bring positive change despite the challenge I was up against.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Robinhood Removal is a junk removal and donation logistics service. Picking up people’s unwanted items and redirecting what can be reused out to charities, and people in need within the community. The only junk removal service that partners with local charities to get reusable materials like clothing out to the homeless, books and bikes to kids, and furniture to people coming off the streets and into housing.
The thing I am most proud of is the cleanup work my team did on the downtown Christmas day bombing site. We were able to pick up numerous apartments worth of materials like couches, beds, lamps, sheets, art, and other things that we donated out to the community. That opportunity allowed us to bring light to an otherwise dark and harrowing event.
We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking?
Founding this company was a major risk, I didn’t enjoy college and I always knew I wanted to work for myself and I did exactly that in starting Robinhood. Over a year ago during the height of the pandemic while nobody seemed to be hiring I decided to start something that would allow me to help others and spread some positivity in the community when it seemed like only bad news was flourishing. Now that I’ve spent years doing this work I’ve realized taking that risk was well worth it.
