Hi Derrick, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a creative professional with a diverse background. As a musician and vocalist, I have honed my skills while also being a certified data analyst. My experience extends to the hospitality sector, where I have contributed significantly. I am actively involved in event curation and work within A&R.
My musical journey began in a family deeply rooted in ministry and music in a small town by the name of Prentiss, Ms. Rosehill Church is in Silver Creek, Ms. I started performing alongside my great aunt, Elsie, who led our family quartet, The Voices of Harmony and directed the youth choir at our church. My weekends revolved around quartet and choir music and community worship. I was baptized by Pastor Eddie Porter, the father of the renowned group, Paul Porter and the ChristianAires, who also entrusted me with my first leadership role in music at the tender age of eleven.
Having lived in Mississippi for the first forty years of my life, I eventually connected with Sir The Baptist and joined ChurchPpl. As the pandemic approached, I made the decision to relocate to Nashville to assist with the TSU Aristocrat of Bands project which won multiple grammy awards, and I have since made it my home. Currently, I serve as the Minister of Music and Worship at Roger Heights Baptist Church. Additionally, I hold positions as a music director for the Stones River Baptist District Association and the Tennessee Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention Middle Region.
I am also founding member of The Quartet Music Awards alongside Connie Birth and Chubbs Morton, The Gulf Coast Gospel Music Awards founded by Lekeisha Cotten and the creative force behind The State of Music in the Black Church.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road in life is always smooth. The elders in my family were singers. I wish I would have had someone in my space that understood the male voice and the voice change. That in itself made me want to learn more about the pedagogy of the voice. I am thankful that I have had the rough places in life. They have made me be more appreciative.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In 2012, I founded Tranzparent Music, LLC, inspired by the memory of my grandmother, Hazel. My mission has always been to create music and events that not only entertain but also lead people to Christ. With locations established in two areas, I aimed to provide expansive platforms for our talented members to delve into the world of music.
Our roster included artists making impressive strides, such as K’Neisha, who’s currently shining on the southern soul charts; one is a dedicated high school band director; one is an inspiring individual who created a community choir for youth. I’m passionate about sharing our platform and encouraging my singers to achieve even greater success than I have.
In addition to nurturing artists, I also engage in marketing and branding efforts to elevate their presence. My experience in radio has enriched my understanding of this dynamic industry. I believe that staying proactive is essential; after all, an idle mind can lead to unproductive habits.
Another initiative I proudly founded is LEAP—Lessons Empowering Artists to Play. Growing up, I had the privilege of learning music, and now I’m committed to sharing that gift with young people. Not only does music keep them engaged and on the right path, but it can also pave the way for their higher education opportunities. Through LEAP, we aim to empower the next generation through the transformative power of music.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
It is challenging to identify a single lesson that stands out, as there are several significant insights that come to mind. Firstly, hard work yields rewards. Additionally, it’s essential to recognize that our talents are not solely for our own benefit; we have a responsibility to share them with others. Investing in others is invaluable. While there may be some opportunities provided to the privileged, the intrinsic value of personal effort and contribution cannot be replicated. Embracing a selfless approach can unlock opportunities that a selfish mindset cannot. I acknowledge that my journey thus far would not have been possible without the support and guidance of others.
