Meet Donny Apollo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donny Apollo.

Hi Donny, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I originally got inspired to do music as a guitarist. I was listening to metal and many variants of that genre. I played guitar for years but what really pushed me into what I do today was listening to Speakerboxx and the love below (OutKast), Justified (Justin Timberlake) and Late Registration (Kanye West) when I was like 12 years old.

It made me wanna change how I made music and eventually around 22-23 years old, I started creating hip-hop-infused music that I make today with no limits on what sounds I use.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I definitely had some struggles. Mentally, I just wasn’t there. I grew up in a military family that moved somewhere new every other year, so I wasn’t used to making relationships with people and honestly never really mastered the art of being selective about who I allowed myself to be around. So moving to Nashville around 18, I really wasn’t the best person or version of myself which created a lot of struggles for me that I didn’t know how to deal with.

I lost a lot of friends and had a lot of damaged relationships. I at one point had an abusive drug problem and was living in my car until the light bulb finally switched on for me and I found passion from my pain to keep doing what I do and take care of myself and the people around me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m known as Donny Apollo, a recording artist from Nashville, TN that is traveling to make something of myself. I am very proud of my recovery and commitment to my craft. I’ve beaten a lot of dark mental struggles and made it from sleeping in my 04 Honda Accord to traveling and making music in my Jeep.

What sets me apart from many others is I don’t sound consistently like anyone. I utilize many sounds and influences to create unique music experiences. I am in no competition with anyone but myself and being the best version of myself I can truly be.

What do you think about happiness?
Making music makes me the happiest and release days are like Christmas to me. But I also enjoy my dogs, spending time with my father, my hopefully soon-to-be fiancée, and my best friend Caleb Sprinkle who is a big role model of mine.

Sushi, anime (One Piece and Attack on Titan are the best), family hands, and making music make me the happiest Outside of my PlayStation lol.
