Meet Elizabeth Lane

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Lane.

Hi Elizabeth, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I started my television career in 2016 in Lubbock, Texas.

For those who aren’t familiar, that’s about five hours west of Dallas. In college, I wanted to be a journalist or a lawyer. I knew if I didn’t take the chance and move to a small market, I’d never end up in TV. It was a great experience! I broke my first huge story and made my first national network appearance. It was energizing and drove me to keep going. After a year, I moved up about 100 markets to Birmingham, Alabama. It felt like a homecoming because I’m a University of Alabama graduate.

A couple of years ago, I moved up again, this time to Nashville. I’m currently the weekend morning anchor at WKRN. I’ve spent hours on the air reporting and anchoring breaking news stories, traveled to cover hurricanes and severe weather for our network, and much more. The 2:30 am alarm clock keeps me on my toes.

In January, I finally pulled the trigger and launched a more personal online platform elizabethlane.me. I share the other side of Elizabeth Lane, what I call the Traditionally Modern Woman. We discuss hospitality and homemaking tips, wedding planning details (which is taking up a lot of my time lately!), and general lifestyle content. It’s been a lot of fun to share a side of myself that is creative and many of our viewers didn’t know before.

I think they know me better now! I’d love to launch my own podcast one day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As the saying goes, nothing worth having comes easy. Like all career paths, television certainly comes with its own set of challenges. The news never stops, so I’ve worked holidays, unconventional hours, and 14 day stretches (that happened more frequently early in my career). You make a lot of sacrifices for the job.

Another challenge is getting used to the fact that our viewers have constant access to the newsroom phone number, email, and social media pages. So many of the people who wake up with us every morning are kind and encouraging, and I appreciate them so much. But you’d be absolutely floored by some of the messages we get about clothing, appearance, the way we talk, etc. Learning to ignore the haters is an important life skill that all of us, on television or not, have to work on sometimes!

I struggled with fear of failure when thinking about launching my new lifestyle platform; in fact, I let it hold me back for about a year. I regret that so much! Finally, I took my own advice: Ignore the haters. Not everyone will be interested in me, on television or off, and that’s alright. I think some of that confidence comes with age.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I wake up to a 2:30 am alarm every morning to keep our viewers in Middle Tennessee informed. I specialize in breaking news anchoring and reporting. In December, we covered historic and devastating tornadoes in Kentucky. I solo-anchored continuing coverage as new information and images were coming into the newsroom. If I can be an honest but calming voice, even on the worst news days, I’m very proud of that.

A fun fact that sets me apart is that I actually started in this business at 20 years old. I knew what I wanted to do and was driven to that end. I’ve always been a bit of an overachiever. I missed out on some fun social activities by finishing high school and college early, but I’ve never looked back. Those sacrifices definitely set me on the path I wanted to be on.

In terms of my lifestyle platform, I love showing young women that they can grow a career and home! People are sometimes surprised when they know me in a professional capacity, then come to my house and it’s like Southern Living. The more content I’ve created, the more I’ve heard from other women in the 25-35 age range that they resonate with this, and there aren’t many resources out there like it.

What makes you happy?
Trips to the beach, trying a new restaurant, breaking a news story, putting together a tablescape, cooking, and planning our wedding! It’s at the Old Course Hotel in St. Andrews, Scotland in 2023. My fiancé, Andrew, and I are so excited.

I’ve been making a conscious effort to try and have more hobbies versus just scrolling on social media.

I’ve always been an extrovert, but I think my job has actually made me slightly more introverted. After a day of working, I enjoy being at home and relaxing there.
