Today we’d like to introduce you to Ella Mine.
Hi Ella, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I’m Ella Mine, a Nashville art-rock artist searching through the terror-filled landscapes of devastating human experiences for any unshakeable beauties buried there. After training most of my life classically, I started writing and recording when I realized I had to when no other outlet seemed sufficient to process trauma. In the early stages of making my debut album, Dream War, I discovered that other people would suddenly find themselves facing their difficulties and fears through the outworking of my pain. My goal in music is to offer a hospitable space where my sweet listeners might untangle the mysteries of their emotions. To engage with the pain in a safe and fruitful space that could ultimately edify other hurting humans.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Writing through complicated feelings is its little monster. Humans naturally want to protect themselves from what we’ve learned is painful. We don’t want to dive back into the waters that almost drowned us. Some of us believe (whether right or wrong is another conversation) that we must.
Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I’m currently playing shows supporting my debut record, a concept album called Dream War. Dream War explores the question, “how can we again dream, hope, or love when our first dreams have been crushed, our first hopes dashed, and our first loves ravaged?” It’s a difficult question to engage with the show after show, but I’ve found intense joy in hearing how audiences have met themselves in the experience. I also find wild and emotional gratification in the music itself. In addition to my project, I have the privilege of playing in a few other bands (Arlie [we’re on tour now; see us!], Fulton Lee, S. Grant Parker). And freelancing as a visual artist (chalkboard stop motion animation and oil painting commissions).
What matters most to you?
I want you to feel free to walk through the shadows you fear. I want you to have the space to engage with the complex emotions our society tends to push aside for productivity. I want you to experience the beauty that makes you glad to be alive on this little earth and see the colors of the sky as if the paint is still wet. If I can create an environment for you where any of those things happen, my desires will be wildly satisfied.
