Meet Emily Falvey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Falvey.

Emily Falvey

Hi Emily , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been writing songs since about age 9, but really, my musical journey begins at 5 when my parents put me into piano lessons. I saw artists like Taylor Swift on my TV writing songs, and I thought to myself: “I can do that!” In middle school, I was told about Belmont University by a family friend and heard that songwriting was a college major and the rest was history – it became my lifelong goal to get into the Songwriting program there. Luckily, I did, and matriculated in 2014. When I got to Nashville & saw how talented everyone was, I declared a double major in Music Business as a “backup plan.” For most of my college journey, I took internships and sought to understand more about music publishing. I ended up interning at both SMACK and Warner/Chappell while I was in college. SMACK signed me to my first publishing deal when I was a senior at Belmont after hearing my angsty demos I was writing alone in my dorm room, and I just signed my second publishing deal in April 2023 as a joint venture with both SMACK & Warner/Chappell. In the first 6 years of my career, I’ve had the extraordinary privilege of working with artists I’m passionate about, writing songs with Nashville’s finest, and following the dream I’ve had since I was a kid.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Most definitely not, ha. I think people see my story of signing a publishing deal while still in college & that was an enviable position to be in, for sure – but I have struggled deeply & consistently along the way. Being a woman who writes with a female perspective in a male-dominated industry is a constant point of resistance for me. The current royalty landscape that digital streaming platforms like Spotify have perpetuated makes being a pure songwriter virtually unlivable financially without consistent hits on the radio (which is like finding a needle in a haystack every time!). In 2021, I had a falling out with someone really important to me creatively when I realized they had been taking advantage of me financially. As a young woman in the industry who tends to be optimistic & see the best in everyone, I was blindsided & deeply hurt to learn that not everyone in the entertainment industry has the best intentions. I’ve had to learn (a lot of times the hard way) to be a quick judge of character, to be fierce in my values & ideals, and recommit to myself over & over again that I want to show up like myself even amidst the very difficult struggles that come along with pursuing a career in music.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a singer/songwriter based in Nashville. I write songs in country, pop, electronic dance music (EDM), and occasionally the contemporary Christian music (CCM) & Latin genres. I am most proud of the fact that I’ve had over 100 cuts as a songwriter thus far in a wide variety of genres. I consider myself to be a versatile writer whose passion is to help artists tell their stories, and I feel that I’m set apart from others because I’m a type A creative person with a deep commitment to make others feel seen & cared about during the creative process.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think to be a hit songwriter there are a lot of characteristics that have to add up – excellence, commitment to the grind, luck, and the ability to be in with the right people at the right time. For my own career & my successes thus far, I think that my work ethic & relational nature are what have gotten me to where I am.
