Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Tunney.
Hi Erin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into the world of real estate and construction is deeply rooted in family and community, with a legacy that stretches back to the mid 1900s when my grandfather first started in construction. He was a true craftsman, dedicating his life to building homes that were not just structures, but part of the community’s fabric. My father followed in his footsteps, and about ten years ago, we formalized our family’s work by establishing the Tunney Group.
I initially started my career in real estate right after graduating from college. However, with the onset of the financial crisis in 2009, I decided to pivot into education, earning Masters degree in Language, Literacy, and Culture. I spent several years working as a Reading Specialist in Chicago, a role that allowed me to make a meaningful impact on the lives of students.
Despite my love for teaching, the pull towards the family business was always there. The opportunity to blend my educational background with my passion for construction and design became too strong to resist, and I knew I had to return to my roots.
When I moved to Nashville, a city known for its creativity and growing sense of community, I joined the Tunney Group full-time. Here, I’ve been able to merge my love for education with real estate, guiding clients through the process of finding or building homes that are not just structures, but stories waiting to be lived in.
One of the milestones in my career was completing my first new build under my father’s guidance. This project not only deepened my understanding of the craft but also reinforced my commitment to creating homes that are both beautiful and deeply connected to the community’s fabric.
Today, I’m a real estate agent with CØMPASS and continue to work closely with the Tunney Group, focusing on developing timeless homes in Nashville. My mission is to bring a bit of small-town charm into the big city—whether that’s through the design of a home, the relationships I build with clients, or the way I engage with the local community. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has certainly had its bumps, as any meaningful journey does. Transitioning from real estate to education during the financial crisis of 2009 was a significant challenge. The market was incredibly volatile, and many people, including myself, had to pivot and adapt to the changing economic landscape. Moving into teaching was a natural fit for me, but it came with its own set of challenges—navigating a new career path, adapting to the demands of the classroom, and finding ways to make a difference in the lives of students during a tough economic period.
When I decided to return to real estate and construction, there were new challenges to face. Moving to Nashville and re-establishing myself in a new market meant starting over in many ways. Building a network, understanding the unique dynamics of the Nashville real estate market, and balancing my roles within both the Tunney Group and as a real estate agent required a lot of effort and perseverance.
One of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences was completing my first new build under my father’s guidance. While I had the family legacy and support behind me, the pressure to live up to those standards was immense. Every decision felt weighty, knowing it wasn’t just about constructing a building but creating a space that would become a part of someone’s life and the community.
Balancing the expectations that come with being part of a family business, while also carving out my own path, has been a constant theme in my journey. There were times when I questioned my decisions, especially when things didn’t go as planned. But these struggles taught me resilience and the importance of staying true to my vision.
In the end, the challenges have made the successes all the more meaningful. Each obstacle was an opportunity to grow, to learn, and to refine my approach. While it hasn’t always been smooth, I wouldn’t change a thing. The bumps in the road have shaped who I am today and have fueled my passion for creating homes and spaces that truly resonate with the people who live in them.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Tunney Group?
The Tunney Group is more than just a construction and real estate company—we’re a family legacy built on a foundation of craftsmanship, integrity, and a deep commitment to the communities we serve. Our business is rooted in the knowledge and experience passed down through three generations, starting with my grandfather in the 1950s. Today, we continue that tradition by developing and building homes that are not just structures, but places where people can create lasting memories.
Our specialty lies in creating timeless, high-quality homes that blend classic design with modern functionality. We focus on every detail, from the initial design process to the final touches, ensuring that each project reflects our commitment to excellence. What sets us apart is our dedication to maintaining the highest standards in construction while also being deeply connected to the local community. We don’t just build houses; we create homes that are tailored to the unique needs and lifestyles of our clients.
One of the things I’m most proud of is our ability to integrate a personal touch into everything we do. Each project is approached with a deep understanding of the client’s vision and the story they want their home to tell. We take the time to listen, to understand their needs, and to bring that vision to life in a way that feels authentic and true to who they are.
Brand-wise, our reputation for quality and integrity is something we hold dear. We’ve built a brand that people can trust, one that stands for more than just bricks and mortar. Our clients know that when they work with the Tunney Group, they are getting more than just a home; they are getting a partner who will walk with them through every step of the process, ensuring that the end result is something they will cherish for years to come.
I want your readers to know that our work is a labor of love. Whether we’re building a new home, renovating an existing one, or helping someone find their dream property, our goal is always to create spaces that enhance the lives of the people who live in them. We are passionate about what we do, and we take pride in the relationships we build along the way. Our offerings are not just about construction or real estate—they’re about creating a sense of place and belonging, about turning houses into homes, and about making sure that every project we take on is a reflection of our commitment to quality, community, and client satisfaction.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My father has been the cornerstone of my journey in real estate and construction. His mentorship and guidance have been invaluable, teaching me the importance of craftsmanship, integrity, and hard work. From the early days of my career to completing my first new build, he has always been there to offer advice, support, and a steady hand. His experience and passion for the business have shaped not only my approach but also the values that the Tunney Group stands for today.
But it’s not just my father—our family business is truly a collaborative effort. My brother, who is a real estate attorney, brings a wealth of legal expertise that ensures our projects are not only beautifully crafted but also legally sound. My cousin Michael, an inventor and entrepreneur, adds a creative and innovative edge to our work, always pushing us to think outside the box and explore new possibilities.
Together, we form a team that balances tradition with innovation, and it’s this dynamic that has driven our success. Our clients trust us to bring their visions to life, and our family’s collective knowledge and dedication make that possible.
In essence, the success of the Tunney Group is built on the foundation of my father’s wisdom, my brother’s legal acumen, and my cousin’s inventive spirit. I’m incredibly fortunate to have such a strong family team by my side.
