Today we’d like to introduce you to Evelyn Wilson.
I was a cheerleader in both high school and college at The Tennessee State University. I also cheered professionally for a brief time. The participant’s in class used to tell me you have a light and an energy that draws people to you.
and I knew I made a positive impact. I prayed and asked GOD for direction, and HE revealed the purpose and gave me a platform, so EVElution Dance Fitness was born.
Hi Evelyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started as a participant in a Zumba class; as my confidence grew, I slowly moved up front and was dubbed a “Front Row Diva” as those in dance fitness classes call them. Dance is natural for me. The participant’s in-class used to tell me you have a light and an energy that draws people to you. They would follow my lead when the instructor moved around and interacted with the rest of the class. Soon, I was encouraged by my mentor and other class participants to get my Zumba certification. I obtained my ZIN and GROUP X certification and began teaching my first class within a month. I started with a small class as most new instructors do when you are starting out. But, soon the word got out about a class with Evelyn and everyone wanted an Evelyn experience.I started packing out classes within 2 months. I started teaching 6-7 times per week. The demand was consistent, and each week I was adding new participants. Soon the demand grew outside of the class. I was asked to perform or do a demo at different events in Nashville. After doing a couple of events in Nashville and seeing the positive response, I knew I had a following, and I knew the demand was a sign I was making a positive impact. I prayed and asked GOD for direction, and HE revealed the purpose and gave me a platform, so EVElution Dance Fitness was born.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been completely smooth, but it has not been completely rough either. I have been blessed to have a team around me to help me navigate through the business aspect. They are honest enough to tell me what works and what doesn’t. The biggest barrier for me was time and the financial aspect. I believe you have to make time and not make excuses. Your gift makes room for you. You must be intentional and just do it. Networking and making the right connections will help you tremendously. GOD has directed me along the way, and because I trusted HIM, I pushed forward in faith and confidence. You must invest in yourself; though it is not easy, I still struggle sometimes. It will eventually pay off. Consistency is key. Be consistent with your time, finances, and most of all your faith regarding your business. If you love it, it will grow. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from those doing it with notable success. Be open to constructive criticism; however, be careful who you receive that criticism from. Don’t take constructive criticism from someone who has never constructed anything. You must remain committed and intentional with your gift and business.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
EVElution Dance Fitness is a unique dance fitness class that combines Hip Hop, Zumba, African Beats, Reggae, and Line Dancing(both R&B and country). My journey includes performances and demos for Nashville’s own Tennessee Titans and Nashville Predators and classes in Jamaica, Chicago, Memphis, and Alabama. I have performed at the African Street Festival and area block parties such as Open Streets Nashville. An EVElution Dance experience is unlike any other dance fitness class as it incorporates unique choreography for all levels. It is a sexy but super energetic dance experience that members run to weekly. I have been told the fitness choreography that is unique and specific to EVElution makes women feel empowered. I have participants from ages 14-68 years old to take my class.
EVElution promotes a supportive environment for all but especially for women. The “Queens support Queens attitude period” is preached and received in my class. I finish each class with what has been named “Majesty Moments” by the class. These Majesty Moments affirm self-love, self-care, inspiration, or motivation to help get the class through the week. These “Majesty Moments” have become a highlight of an EVElution Dance Fitness class.
I believe we are all Queens that were naturally born into Royalty. Women should support one another and not tear each other down. There is enough adversity out in the world that tries to devalue our worth as women. We should not do that to each other. We are fearlessly, phenomenally, and wonderfully made, so we should keep our “Crowns Up” There is enough out here for us all to eat and prosper. Always remember, as a Queen, you should walk, talk, and love as a Queen should. This is what we say at the end of EVERY class; this is why they love EVElution Dance Fitness. I truly love EVElution Dance Fitness and the people I lead. It is an honor and a blessing to have such an amazing following. There are a number of videos and written testimonials about the EVElution experience (please see the Evelution Dance Fitness IG)
Quote from an random observer:
“You’re amazing. You don’t just dance. Your participants are empowered by what you teach. I watched them too. They took on your persona. Sexy, strong, self-confident.” You do amazing things, Evelyn” -Waymond Guthrie
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I am a woman of faith and look to GOD as my source and strength. He gives me a relevant word when I need it. I would say the Bible and apps of positive energy that are WORD centered.
