Meet Frances Mei Hardin, Md of Nashville, TN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frances Mei Hardin, Md

Hi Frances Mei, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am an ENT surgeon and physician-writer, and I’ve been in medicine for the past decade. I have created the brand Rethinking Residency to provide resources and support for those in medical training and the long-running weekly podcast Promising Young Surgeon. I am a passionate advocate for healthcare worker professional development and wellness and moving into the physician media and marketing world with my new company, the Hippocratic Collective.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Surgical training is no small (or smooth) feat: I completed four years of undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame, took a gap year at WashU (full-time ENT outcomes research), went on to four years of medical school (Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine) and five year ENT resident in Missouri. I became an attending at the age of 30. One of the biggest struggles in my surgical education was the toxicity of medical training today, the rampant verbal and physical abuse in hospitals, which only compound the moral injury and sleep deprivation that physicians experience as well.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently working on my second book as a physician-writer and continuing to build my brand as a podcaster. I am most well known for my national speaking engagements and advocacy on behalf of medical and surgical trainees, who are often demoralized and depleted by the system of medical education. This issue contributes to burnout, depression and suicidality in physicians. My work can be found at Rethinking Residency (rethinkingresidency.com) or on my podcast Promising Young Surgeon, in which I interview physicians, surgeons, and thought leaders on their professional lives and development.
