Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Kirkpatrick.
Hi Grace, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a Nashville native…well actually the only one in my family who is a TRUE Nashville native. I am the youngest out of three siblings. I have a wonderful and inspiring sister, a like-minded creative older brother and the best parents. I have to say that I have the best support system that also includes my wonderful boyfriend Miles. A few other details about me…I LOVE animals. I have three dogs and a horse!
Now onto the details that made me who I am and brought me into the business of boudoir & wedding photography. I have always been a very creative person…mostly a funny creative, but I also take things that mean a great deal to me very seriously. For one, I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. I proudly say that because it has made me who I am today. I also fought anorexia for a lot of my younger years but I am also proud to say that I am recovered and am healthy and happy. My life has been shaped by these building blocks and they have led me to where I am today. My passion for photography comes from my passion to spread the feeling of being loved and feeling worthy. During the period that I was battling an eating disorder, photographs were a horrible trigger for me and were filled with deeply seated negative feelings.
But upon recovery, I began to crystalize the powerful change that I could have for others by delivering positive body image photography. I carry my passion to create positive images into every session that I deliver. With that as background, boudoir photography plays a very special place in my heart. It is vulnerable and yet so very rewarding for me and my clients. I get to encourage women to step out of their comfort zone and show their true beauty…..which is not what your body looks like but who you are as a person. I believe that boudoir photography truly is about loving yourself for who YOU are. We are all different and have different stories, but the one thing that is the same is we all are loved and beautiful. Finally, it is my honor to get to be beside a bride on her wedding day or a women who is struggling with body image. I am so lucky to do what I do.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say that nothing in life is a smooth road. My favorite saying is, “life is messy” and that could not be more true. When I started photography, I had zero experience, but what I did have experience in was celebrating every moment of life. I LOVE to celebrate, and I quickly realized that I would get to celebrate with others in my profession. I had so much doubt in myself and my work when I started. I felt like I wasn’t good enough and I honestly still do sometimes but life is never about perfection but the journey. Self-doubt is a horrible feeling and can take away so much joy. I have realized there is room at the table for everyone and I am special in my own way. The best part of photography is it is a creative art and a way to express yourself… so you can not do it wrong.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love to say I do a little bit of everything because I actually do a little bit of everything. I have done family photography, newborn, expecting mamas, engagements, milestones, weddings and boudoir. I have done it all in the photography world, but just like everything else we all have a true passion for something specific. For me, that is boudoir and wedding photography. I am known for being a free-spirit, natural and nonposing photographer. I am all for the moments that just happen organically and capture the essence of life. I am not as much of a fan of the forced poses. With that as background, I am so proud that I purposefully come into all of my sessions with kindness, empathy and joy. I am very proud of the images I create, but more importantly proud of the smiles that I create on my client’s faces during and after a session. I believe I have a very special view, shaped by my past, that allows me to create a comfortable, natural and fun environment for my sessions. I am absolutely proud of the work that I do and the relationships that I make each and every day.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I do love a good book but I have to be honest… I don’t finish many of them but when I do, I am very proud of myself. I love self-help books or inspirational stories of others making it through hard times by displaying grit and love. I am a huge fan of Jana Kramer and am an avid listener to her podcast “Whine Down with Jana Kramer”.
