Today we’d like to introduce you to Graham Waks. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Graham grew up in Southern California and moved east in 2011 for an internship in Ben’s Studio (RCA Studio A). After falling in love with Nashville and moving to the city, he was hired as a drummer for a touring artist and was engineering when in town. By the end of 2013, Graham bought a house in East Nashville, converted it into a studio, and was engineering records full time.
While building his own studios, he recognized how difficult it was to find affordable acoustic treatments and useful information on home studio acoustics. With only formal training in Music Production, Graham started researching and building his own acoustic panels in his backyard. He began selling his treatments to local musicians and engineers in Nashville. By 2018, this hobby became a business and Music City Acoustics (MCA) was developed.
Graham now describes himself as a “full-blown acoustics nerd.” His focus is on home studio acoustics and providing musicians, engineers, and producers tangible steps needed to get the most out of their spaces.
Graham is no longer working out of his backyard. He and his team of five are now located at a shop in East Nashville. Despite its small size, MCA is shipping panels across the US and consulting on studios internationally.
MCA has worked with hundreds of clients on their studios, offices, restaurants, home theaters, gyms, and more. Clients have included Grammy winners John Blass, Hayley Williams (Paramore), Clarke Schleicher, Dave Audé, Scott Underwood (Train), and Esbin Adony Ramirez.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I am a musician/recording engineer who accidentally found myself with a business. I have no background or education in business and manufacturing, so there has been a lot to learn. When a business starts out as a side gig in your backyard, you don’t necessarily think about how to scale it, formalize processes, train new employees, or how to make sure your supply chain is secure and reliable. So, I have been growing alongside my business! Challenges are a natural part of starting a business, and I think the best thing we can do is drive straight for the bumps in the road, then learn, grow, and improve from the experiences. We just try our best not to total the car!
As you know, we’re big fans of Music City Acoustics. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Acoustics Simplified – It is not only our tagline but the reason Music City Acoustics was started. Not only was it hard to find affordable, effective, high-quality products, but it was nearly impossible to find informative, accurate, and actionable information on acoustics.
These challenges were the driving forces behind the creation of MCA. We now work with home studios, restaurants, offices, recording studios, houses of worship, home theaters, and more to improve the sound in their spaces!
Our team of musicians, artists, and producers all have a passion for sound and take a great deal of pride in our craftsmanship and the quality of our products.
MCA has a focus and commitment to providing accurate and actionable information on acoustics. We hope the educational videos, guides, and articles we put out help demystify acoustics and make it more accessible to anyone who is looking for solutions to their acoustic challenges. We are excited to continue creating more and more resources for everyone over the coming years.
Any big plans?
As a young and growing business, we’re excited for what the next few years will bring! Our goal is to continue growing our online presence and work with more and more clients all over the United States. With a little luck, we will also begin shipping to the rest of North America in the near future.
