Today we’d like to introduce you to Isaiah Brooks.
Hi Isaiah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started dressing up as Spider-Man and standing on street corners to capture kids’ reactions during COVID. What began as a fun idea turned into something much bigger than I ever anticipated when I first bought the costume.
One day, I climbed onto my roof and got stuck when my ladder fell. While waiting for my neighbor to help me down, someone took a picture and posted it on Facebook, which ended up gaining a lot of attention.
About a week later, while I was standing on the street corner, a man approached me and asked if I wanted to earn $50 at his car wash. I accepted, and after attending that event, I decided to create an Instagram account called Springhill Spider-Man. I began posting updates on where Spring Hill Spider-Man would be throughout the day, letting people know where they could find me.
At the time, I was still in high school, and many people began reaching out to ask if I could attend their children’s birthday parties as Spider-Man. I happily accepted every invitation, and in my first year, I ended up doing about 200 birthday parties, all of them for free.
It has always been my mission to help others as much as I can. My wife, McKenna, and I decided to start doing Christmas fundraisers to assist those in need, naming it “Spidey Saves Christmas.” In our 2021 and 2022, we raised over $1,000, which allowed us to provide support for 25 families in need.
In our third year, we created 25 support baskets for the homeless and headed downtown Nashville to distribute them. Each bag included blankets, gift cards, snacks, water, socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, hand sanitizer, and more.
Spring Hill Spider-Man has become quite well-known in the community and even made it onto national news, specifically News Channel 4. At that time, I was facing car issues, which made it challenging to attend my Spider-Man events. A generous individual named Stephen Strickhausen organized a fundraiser to help buy me a new car. The campaign raised $20,000 in Spring Hill, enabling me to purchase a fully paid 2019 Honda Civic.
I am incredibly thankful and grateful for this community. Stephen Strickhausen, the person who organized the fundraiser, and I have become best friends. I attend his church occasionally, and we also work together as co-workers now.
In June of 2022, my wife, McKenna, and I organized and hosted our own free community event. There were over 300 attendees ranging from kids to adults. We had everything from activities for the kids, free pizza provided by Grecian Pizza in Spring Hill, and so much more free activities for the community kids.
I’m still actively performing as Spider-Man and plan to continue for another year. However, with my wife expecting our first daughter in February, I will be slowing down a bit. As of now, I’m still doing six birthday parties every weekend.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part, my journey has been smooth, but I’ve faced some struggles along the way, particularly learning not to overbook myself. I realized that ensuring my body gets enough rest is crucial. There was a time when I pushed myself to do nine birthday parties in one day, and while I managed it, it wasn’t healthy and began to take a toll on my well-being.
Another challenge I still encounter is nervousness. It’s surprising because I’ve done over 750 birthday parties, yet I still feel nervous before each one. Even with a mask covering my face, knowing that all those people and kids are waiting for me can be nerve-racking. Nevertheless, I continue to push through it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work as a roofing contractor for Bluebird Roofing, a fantastic company that prioritizes self-development and community service—values that resonate with me. I enjoy a flexible work schedule and have access to a company car, iPhone, and iPad.
What sets me apart from others in the industry is my commitment to going above and beyond for my clients. When discussing their roofing needs, the conversation feels natural and genuine, rather than a sales pitch. Many clients don’t even realize I’m in sales because I treat them as individuals, actively listening to their needs and wants. This approach has allowed me to build meaningful friendships, and my honesty is a key factor that distinguishes me from others.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Passion. If you want to reach your goals, it helps to care a lot about what you’re doing.
Creativity
A Desire to Improve.
A Commitment to Learning.
