Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackson Floyd.
Hi Jackson, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My entire life I’ve always loved art. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had an affinity for sketching, and over the years I have ventured into painting, sculpting, music, photoshop, and any medium of art imaginable.
For most of my life, it has just been a hobby, and doing it someday as a job seemed unimaginable to me, however, it wasn’t until after high school that I realized that I really couldn’t imagine doing anything that isn’t creative as a career. I am currently 20 and admittedly have not made huge strides towards landing a creative career but I am just happy with doing what I do as an outlet.
Something about cars appeals to me. I couldn’t tell you if it’s the engineering aspect of cars or just the visual appeal of them but cars are a huge passion of mine. A little over a year ago, I started editing photos of my car which eventually led to me deciding I should start editing photos of cars I find appealing so I turned my previous Instagram account (which focused on album covers) into an account dedicated to my car photo edits. This was an easy change for me due to my Instagram account becoming somewhat dead and me losing passion for it seeing as it was somewhat of a joke account.
My biggest point of pride is that sure, I may be classified as a car photographer, but I am by no means a photographer. I take somewhat poorly composed photos from my iPhone; however, I use my artistic abilities to completely transform the photos using Photoshop. One of the biggest changes in mindset I have developed in my life is using rejection as a motivator rather than discouragement.
I need to remind myself that it never hurts to reach out and ask for opportunities because rejection will never hurt you, and acceptance will only benefit you.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road. Trying to grapple with the fact that I feel like I have to do a creative career has been hard seeing as creative careers can be hard to come by compared to most other typical career paths. I’ve also taken hits to my mental health, social life, and even love life which have changed my appeal to art drastically over time. Engaging in art can also be difficult due to the high cost of supplies so when you’re in between jobs, which I was for 6 months, it can be hard to pull together supplies to create.
I had to quit my job due to personal issues affecting my ability to perform my job, however, I recovered from them and I am fortunate enough to have family who understands that I try my best and provide me with my necessities. I have also absolutely struggled with every artist’s worst enemy-doubt in your abilities. Even world-famous artists have these doubts so I find it fairly easy to disregard this doubt but it hasn’t been so simple in the past.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I do pretty much any form of art, however, the art that has found me the most attention is anything I have done with Photoshop. This spans from original art to replacing album covers with actor Willem Dafoe. However, somewhat recently I have started using my love of cars and proficiency in Photoshop to create unique images of cars I find appealing. My favorite medium of art to create however is simple paintings.
I typically create black and white paintings that represent my mental health at that time. I love painting, and I think my love for it shines through the final product. What sets me apart from other car photographers is that rather than using expensive cameras and sliders to make high-quality images, I hand edit each aspect of an image down to the pixel using brush tools and some sliders. I also believe my paintings are set apart from others due to my ability to mirror my mental state at the time, creating truly unique pieces of art.
Any big plans?
I would love to travel around more. Traveling is the most therapeutic thing for me and allows me to be more in touch with myself. I believe traveling has produced some of my best work.
I would love to grow my social media presence to use the account as a portfolio when applying for jobs.
However, my ultimate goal for the future is to make a career out of creating art. As of right now, I have no changes planned, I just want to continue growing and getting better at what I do.
