Today we’d like to introduce you to Janey Street.
Hi Janey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a singer-songwriter. I came up in the music business in the 70s. I grew up in Queens NY and had my first blues band in the 7th grade. We played every weekend and actually got paid. The keyboard player and I started writing songs and left the band to form a duet by the time I was in High School. We got discovered and signed a record deal with Warner brothers Reprise records while still in high school and recorded our 1st record. We were young. good looking and had a really great sound so before too long we were on the road opening for big acts like the Bee Gees, Richie havens, Melanie, and many more. We even played the Fillmore East. We did a second record for Capital records. As the story goes, soon after that we broke up. I fell in love with the backup guitar player. Typical chick singer story… I managed to put a new band together with my new boyfriend and my ex-keyboard player boyfriend and we played around New York City. At that time, I was living in a beautiful loft in Tribeca for a few hundred bucks a month. Now it’s worth millions. The truth of it is, I ended up picking up the guitar player’s underwear while he made money on the road with big acts. He was in demand and we needed the money. After five years, that relationship broke up. At that time, I had some career move options. One option was working with a hit producer in LA. He flew me out to LA to do some tracks and I ended up living on the beach in Hermosa Beach pursuing a solo career. It was a fresh start. Then I was offered a record deal with Arista records under Clive Davis, I signed and had a hit and then dropped from the label because I didn’t sell enough records. At that point, I started writing songs for film and TV. When that dried up, I moved to Nashville. I’ve written with all the hit writers here and it’s been a great experience. I have had a few cuts. Recently out of the blue, I was asked to sign with Blue Elan Records. I took the opportunity and recorded two records out in LA. I received a lot of critical acclaim. I toured the North East and kept writing and then Covid 19 hit us all. I am now writing a fictional feature film script based on my life story. Through my years in Nashville, I have been mentoring up-and-coming songwriters working with NASI (Nashville Songwriters Association). I also have been working with a nonprofit organization “Music For Seniors” performing at assisted living, nursing homes, and senior community centers. When I first came to town, I worked as a vet tech at Murphy Road Animal Hospital. My real dream was to be a Veterinarian. Because of Covid and not being able to perform and pay the bills, I started boarding dogs at my house through Rover.com and I love it. I find dogs to be much more loving than people. So, these days, I mentor online, and work on my script while hanging out with all kinds of different dogs. At this point in my life, that’s ok with me. I do plan on getting back into the studio co-producing some young artists sometime soon.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think that is all explained in my story. The struggle in the music business and all the arts is and has always been between the business and creativity. The two things really don’t go together really well and there’s always conflict. The business people are into making profit and the artists are into making art. Two very different things. My challenges have always been getting a lot of support from business people and then suddenly their profits were disappointing and they dropped me like a hot potato. I have had to find my way out of depression several times because all of a sudden, they were gone I was left holding the bag. I think during my many years in the business, overcoming that has been my biggest challenge. Also, getting paid for my work. That’s universal for most artists.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I sing, write songs, perform and work in the studio. I have been doing it for 55 years, so I guess that sets me apart. I can write radio-friendly songs; any genre and I can write songs for myself as an artist. As an artist, I feel like I am unique and have a lot to say. The thing I think I like most about my work is the studio. I love the art of recording more than anything else. I am most proud of my records. To me, that’s my best work. The studio is like a canvas and the sounds are like different colors. Whether it’s a live session with live musicians or a guy behind a computer, if the song is great and the playing and mixes are great, it’s magic.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
My life experience is my best resource. I know a lot of songwriters that read books about the craft and take workshops and I have conducted a lot of workshops, but I never had to read a book to learn how to write songs. I just listened and it just came naturally.
