Meet Jared Atol

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Atol.

Hi Jared, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I studied jazz at the University of Denver. After graduating, I wanted to find a way to get my own music out into the world. I had a vision for a video series where I’d record arrangements I had done, live, in random locations around Denver. When I got quotes on what it would cost to bring this vision to life, I was appalled.

I could afford my own gear for that amount of money, so I bought some recording equipment and some cameras. My friends found out I had all this gear and began calling me to record and film their projects. Soon, I found myself in the studio more than on a stage. I had no idea how to even plug a microphone in but I said yes to every project that came my way.

After years of learning as I went, I finally got to assist a major producer out of Austin, TX – Dwight Baker. Getting to witness a master’s at work changed my life. I picked up and moved to Nashville, and I’m so grateful I get to work with artists from all over the country.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. This journey has been full of struggles and obstacles at every turn.

Especially at the beginning – there’s so much failure and doubt. There are no get-rich-quick schemes in this industry. You have to put the time in and sludge through being terrible until you’re not so terrible anymore. I cringe listening to my early mixes and productions, but it feels good knowing I’ve progressed from there.

I’ve made every rookie mistake in the book, but they were all necessary to becoming a professional. No educational institution can provide the wisdom that failure brings. I learned to be comfortable in turbulence.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I produce and mix records for artists around the country.

Pop and pop adjacent is my specialty. I love getting to spend time in the studio with an artist tackling a vision. Bringing something to life. The feeling you get when an idea turns into a completed work is fulfillment- like you conquered something today. Joining an artist’s journey and elevating their creation is everything to me.

I’m most proud of the community I’m a part of. All the artists, fellow producers, mixers, and mastering engineers have become like family and I couldn’t do any of this without them.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Favorite books – war of art – Stephen press field. Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance- Robert Persig.

I love podcasts and listen to so many great ones – dissect, hardcore history, song exploder, and the writer are, tape notes, Freakonomics, the list goes on.
