Today we’d like to introduce you to JJ Schrick.
Hi JJ, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I originally began producing as a means to an end for myself as an artist. I quickly fell in love with it though. I mainly pursued the artist route for a while, but I discovered how much I love supporting artists and helping them find their sound. I still write and record my own music, but producing has become such a fulfilling journey for me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I burned out when I was focusing on the artist route. It was a really hard season for me, but I wouldn’t have it any other way, because I discovered how much I enjoy helping artists find their voice as writers and helping them hone their craft. It also enabled me to be able to help artists define and reach their goals, because I know personally how challenging it is to get traction in releasing music. Now, I can use the lessons learned to help me be a better resource for other artists, and also help me with putting out my own music.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a producer, mix engineer, and composer. I’m known for building out full tracks in the Indie, Folk, and Alternative space. I’ve grown up listening to the work of past producers like George Martin, Phil Spector, Niles Godrich, and others who incorporate interesting layers to create walls of sound.
I’m most proud of helping artists find their voice through their music, and helping them get a professional result through collaboration. I take a lot of pride in my classical training intersecting with guitar-based music, because I have a strong understanding of both music theory and I have a good ear for harmony, chord progressions, song structures, etc.
I think what sets me apart is being intimately familiar with the challenges we face as music artists. But the reason we do write and release our own music, is because creating that music is an innate part of us that we just can’t help but nurture, or else we suffer. I know the struggle and joys of making music, and my experience as an artist has been useful in helping the artists I work with build a foundation for their careers, play shows, collaborate, etc.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I had always been the kid looking out the window, daydreaming during class. Music’s always had a hold on me, but I did theatre and sports growing up too. I’ve always been well-rounded in my interests, and that has helped me to not limit my perspective on life.
