Meet Joyce Roseman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce Roseman. 

Joyce, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
ReThrive Designs, Nashville, is a distinctive guitar string jewelry company. Our small business tells the story of grit, grace, and guitar strings and how our lives have been forever changed by a moment of inspiration. 

Glen and I are layered creative artists who spent many years teaching music and this became the springboard for our creative jewelry business. In March 2009, while teaching guitar lessons, Glen had the brilliant moment of inspiration to repurpose his guitar strings into beautiful jewelry. At first, I was not convinced, but with some gentle persuasion, I obliged and now here we are over 12 years later still producing innovative designs. 

ReThrive is more than handcrafting guitar string jewelry though. It’s the gritty story of surviving MI that drives us forward. Glen and I have spent 32 years carefully navigating his mental health. We understand personally the devastating results of job loss, stigma, stereotyping, and discrimination. 

ReThrive’s passion is to share the needs of the mental health survivors, to inspire others like Glen to thrive through creative employment. Our passion is mental health advocacy and our personal story is the inspiration. Each purchase ensures that we can continue to speak openly, to encourage the mental health conversations, and to write blogs that can change how you view mental illness. 

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a very challenging road. There have been joyous seasons when everything went better than planned. There’s also been trials and painful seasons when we had no idea what the next leg of the journey would look like. Even now, after the pandemic, it can be challenging to compete and find places sympathetic to the need of small creative business owners who are in their later mid-life years. 

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our jewelry is very exquisite compared to the imitations that have sprung up over the past 12 years. Our signature design is made using a guitar pick and our most unique design features hammered bass strings. What sets us apart is our story! We didn’t see this somewhere and decide it was a great idea to steal. Instead, it was pure inspiration. We are also cause marketed. Mental health awareness is the driving force behind our business. 

How do you think about happiness?
Happiness is doing what we love every day and making a living at it! We feel very privileged to do what we love and consider our business among the greatest of our blessings.
