Today we’d like to introduce you to Justine Blanchet.
Hi Justine, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born on the South Shore of Montreal and grew up with three siblings. I was exposed to music very young. As soon as I could stand, I was dancing to Shania Twain. I began playing piano at 4 and went on to also learn guitar and saxophone. I got into singing around 11 after surviving acute appendicitis and sepsis. I was drawn to opera first and then moved on to country music! That was when I also started songwriting. I loved it and just kept going.
I fell in love with Nashville when I visited it for the first time at 14 and have been wanting to live there since I played at The Bluebird a few years later. Fast forward to today and here I am. I split my time between Music City and the Montreal area and my new single, “Hard to Love” is my first to be produced in Nashville by Danick Dupelle.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Lots of obstacles. For one, when I first began, performing in English was not accepted in many singing competitions. There aren’t many venues to play as well. Funding is also a major obstacle because it really drives everything.
While these experiences have been challenging, they have also made me a better artist and industry professional. Being able to share my music and build my career as an artist – among other things – have kept me going. Otherwise I might have given up!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m spending more time in Nashville right now to work towards my first EP, which is due next year. I’m heading back there for the next few months to wrap up the recording.
I think one of the things that sets me apart – and which helps be overall as an artist – is that I’m very eager willing to learn as much as I can.
I have a Bachelor of Communications/Marketing degree and I’ve used the skills I’ve gained through that program to assist other artists and make professional strides with Miyagi, a Canadian learning solutions company I am involved with.
When I’m in Nashville, my focus is always on my music, but my education has given me knowledge and confidence to look at things in ways I might not otherwise have considered.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Listening to my music is definitely the best way to support me! As I mentioned, my new single and music video – “Hard to Love” – is out now. In the meantime, I hope to see everyone around Music City at shows and through songwriting sessions!
Word of mouth is super important and any requests to write and perform are absolutely welcomed!
