Meet Kaitlyn Sawyer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Sawyer.

Hi Kaitlyn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I lived in a small town just 45 minutes west of Nashville. Now, if you’re from a small town, you know people talk! I came out at 14, but not by choice.

As I got older, I always held onto to harsh words of others. The depression & anxiety followed. I kept searching for ways to find peace & lost job after job in the process. I really felt I would never find what made me the happiest. I tried college. Three times is a charm, right? I also can’t forget about the time I was a farmhand! I tried everything.

But nothing felt right.

In 2017, when my mother, who is also a photographer, handed down her old Nikon camera, I felt that peace I had been searching for. I found myself working endlessly to learn all I could. I read books, watched tutorials, gave free shoots, ANYTHING I could get my hands on. Through all the failures, good days, & bad days I still stuck it out.

I realized that my photoshoots provided an outlet for all of these emotions. Not only for me but for others that feel the same way. I felt like my voice finally mattered and people were listening! I was able to form concepts that helped empower women & the Queer community, which showed me how to love myself in the process.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a bumpy road to get where I am. It takes a ton of dedication & investing. Most days are okay, but being an artist can be draining when you have no inspiration. You will search for inspiration in the strangest of places!

One of my biggest struggles to this day is time management. As a full-time photographer, sometimes it’s hard to keep up a schedule you choose for yourself.

As bumpy as it can be, it is equally rewarding when you see the smile on the client’s face!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I like to call myself an Alternative Photographer. The kind of photography that isn’t quite the “norm!” I love working with a variety of different styles using color, texture, and/or motion.

I specialize in creative portraits, maternity, & senior photos.

I find that I take more time to make my clients comfortable. I don’t mind the extra time it takes because you do your best when you’re feeling yourself!

What do you like and dislike about the city?
If you walk Broadway on a Friday night, you will find music at every corner. You can feel the creativity buzzing from the streets. Nashville is one of few cities where you can wave at someone & get a friendly response in return!

I absolutely love her creativity. And she is one hell of a woman.
