Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Thomas.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a child, growing up in Linden, Guyana. I enjoyed fresh fruit and vegetables from our family garden. My siblings & I would help my parents make food that they would sell out of their food truck.
Our family later transitioned to the US, moving to Brooklyn, NY where I had my 3 sons. Over the years I would cook for family and friends, and fulfill small catering orders. I later moved to Nashville to give my boys better opportunities. After struggling to find a quality employment, I took chance in starting my catering business. This led to me gaining experience in restaurants & food trucks. Over a decade in operation, I had to step away in 2016 for health reasons. Now I am running a Scratch kitchen concept making my some of my favorite Guyanese dishes.
We’ve been impressed with The Pepper Pott, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We underwent a relaunch and rebrand during the summer of 2020 with potential Covid restrictions in mind. It was a natural transition to operate as a takeout/delivery concept offering Contactless Curbside Pick-up & Delivery.
We love to execute pop-up events where we create a specialty menu, and unique experiences.
We offer a combination of fresh & natural ingredients, paired with generations of traditional recipes. If there is anything we can assure is that the Pride of Guyanese Culture is a primary feature.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Although we create dishes with oxtails, beef, chicken, etc. I am pescatarian and enjoy vegetarian diet on most days. No need to worry about the taste being right when I have my sons to happily taste test the menu.
