Meet Katherine Powers of Powers of Health Pediatrics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Powers.

Hi Katherine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Born and raised in Southeast Michigan, Katherine Powers, DNP, known as “Dr. Kat,” has always been drawn to the joy, energy, and resilience that children bring to her practice. She is a board-certified pediatric nurse practitioner, holding both her undergraduate and doctorate degrees from the University of Michigan. Dr. Kat has experience in acute-care settings, including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, as well as in outpatient pediatric clinics in Michigan and Tennessee. Her expertise is further enhanced by extensive continuing education in metabolic health, psychosocial and epigenetic factors affecting health, and integrative health practices.

Dr. Kat’s approach is personal, having sought functional medicine herself to improve her own health. She collaborates closely with families to create individualized treatment plans that prioritize nutrition, lifestyle, and environmental factors, helping children not just heal, but thrive. As a Pediatric Functional Health Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Kat’s mission is to empower children and their families by providing personalized, holistic care that nurtures both physical and emotional well-being. With a profound understanding of pediatric health, she integrates evidence-based practices with functional medicine principles to address the root causes of health concerns, not just symptoms.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
If the road is ever “smooth” – I feel I am not challenging myself to my full potential. I have always had a tenacity to learn and be challenged. Working in the clinic care setting brought so much joy to my life but I internally struggled with the pull of wanting to always do more for my patients – spend more time with them, investigate deeper, advise steps that promoted healing and true treatment not just symptom management. This internal conflict became so heightened I knew I needed to take matters into my own hands and start a business. This was terrifying as a healthcare work as the business world was uncharted territory. With continuing to lean into my passion for providing individualized root-cause care plans, seeing healthy children thrive, and the pursuit of ongoing learning and evolving, this has created a road of challenge but SO much excitement and success!

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think life is all about taking risks. I remind myself often that when I think back on life’s events thus far, the ones I am most proud of and feel most fulfilled by were all rooted in a challenging, risky time. Whether it took taking a risk mentally, financially, physically, emotionally – the risk led to the reward. Risks elicit fear and feel scary. Excitement and fear are felt similarly in the brain and I try to remind myself that in the feelings of fear and risk-taking there is a foundation of excitement and care. The reason we feel intimidated by it is because we want it to go well, we don’t want the risk to fall short. And sometimes it does. Sometimes we get the reward, sometimes we get the lesson – both are invaluable and lead to success in the immediate or for the next time.
