Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Austin.

Hi Katie , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Back in 2018, my best friend Lacy gave me a call that ended up changing both of our careers. She was working as a full-time nurse but felt a pull toward something more creative. With her cosmetology license still active and a spark of inspiration from someone she knew in the wedding industry, she decided to try her hand at bridal hairstyling and asked if I could help with some marketing.

Initially, I planned to just support her from behind the scenes. But coming from a background in dance and having always been drawn to makeup artistry, I felt compelled to dive in myself. I enrolled in a makeup program, and before long, we were building something together. We quickly saw how valuable it was to offer both hair and makeup services as a single vendor—something that brides appreciated for its ease and cohesiveness.

What started as a small side project gained momentum through word of mouth, and soon we found ourselves growing a team. That’s how Lips and Locks Nashville was born. A major part of our success has come from the intentional way we build our team—not just with talented professionals, but with people who radiate calm, kind, and supportive energy. We know that technical skill matters, but so does the atmosphere we bring into a bride’s wedding morning. We lead with both artistry and heart.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, we’ve been incredibly blessed with a positive journey. The challenges we’ve faced haven’t been on the creative side—that part has always come naturally and been a source of joy. The bumps in the road have mostly come from learning how to run the business side of things in a way that’s smart, sustainable, and professional.

In the beginning, Lacy was handling most of the business operations. But as roles shifted and I stepped into leading the day-to-day, I had to find my rhythm and figure out systems that worked for me and the way I lead. That learning curve has been both humbling and empowering.

Of course, like many entrepreneurs, one of the ongoing challenges is also maintaining work/life balance. When you truly love what you do—and we all do—it can be hard to say no or press pause when you know it’s time to prioritize rest, self-care, or family. But we’re learning that sustainability matters just as much as success.

We draw a lot of inspiration from other professional artists, particularly through YouTube and social media platforms where we can watch tutorials, trends, and behind-the-scenes content. Staying current with award shows and red carpets is another way we keep up with what’s trending, timeless, and evolving in the beauty world. Additionally, taking masterclasses from fellow artists always sparks fresh ideas and helps us continue to grow and refine our skills. These resources keep us inspired, motivated, and always learning.
