Meet Katie Hamilton Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Hamilton Jones.

Hi Katie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I grew up always loving art and creating. When I went to college, I didn’t know if I can actually make a living going into art or taking photographs. For the longest time, I thought I wanted to be a photojournalist for National Geographic. I wanted to photograph people in their natural state and beauty.

While not fully knowing what I wanted to do, I majored in Marketing because it seemed like a safe degree. I went on to work in the corporate marketing world right when I got out of college. It was during this time, that I started to photograph friend’s weddings on the side. I finally decided that I couldn’t do the corporate world anymore so I was going to do whatever it took to go into photography.

I worked three jobs when I first left marketing, but I was doing what I loved. Eventually, the hard work paid off and I’ve been full-time five years going on 6 years.

Weddings were something that I never thought I would want to do, but I figured out that you can photograph them in a different way. It’s just another amazing way to tell somebody’s story and be able to capture pure joy. How wouldn’t I love that?!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think any business owner would tell you that it’s a smooth road, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. You have to wear so many different hats and you can deal with self-doubt and comparison, but in the end, you remember why you are doing this. I couldn’t imagine not photographing weddings and being able to use my creativity as a job.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a wedding and lifestyle photographer. I would like to say that my work is a mixture of honest storytelling, earthy, genuine, and artistic.

I am most proud of how far I’ve come while being self-taught. The places that photography has taken me is beyond what I could ever imagine.

I would like to think that my perspective and how I look at a wedding day or session is what sets me apart. I’m always looking for those in-between connections and moments. The ones that you’ll remember for years to come.

Any big plans?
All the time I’m always looking to expand my mind and the way I look at things. I’m looking forward to the growth that is to come from classes, mentors, self-reflection, and more. There are no big changes at the moment, but I have a lot of ideas of what more I can do with my photography and creativity in the future.
