Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Tunbridge
Hi Katy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey in music began in Australia, where I was born and raised. From a young age, I was captivated by the power of music and storytelling. I started performing locally, and my passion for music quickly grew into a lifelong commitment. Over the years, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with some of the industry’s most talented individuals, including Grammy-nominated producer Billy Smiley, Peewee Hill, who has played with legends like (Sly Stone & Billy Preston)., Bruce Watson from Foreigner, Willie Brown Jr., known for his work with Alicia Keys, Janelle Monáe and Patti LaBelle, Gary Lunn who plays bass for Dolly Parton and many more..
In pursuit of my dreams, I moved to Los Angeles, a city teeming with opportunities and creative energy. Here, I immersed myself in the vibrant music & acting scene, working tirelessly to refine my craft and expand my network.
Recording my latest album in Nashville was a pivotal moment in my career. The city’s rich musical heritage and supportive community provided the perfect backdrop for creating music that resonates deeply with my audience.
One of the highlights of my career has been the release of my single “Lying Through Your Teeth,” which has been nominated for an award at the Hollywood Independent Music Awards on July 18th. This recognition affirmed my belief in the power of authentic storytelling through music. Additionally, my recent booking for a stadium gig and more opportunities to write in Nashville is so humbling and a testament to my dedication and the impact of my music.
I recently released my single “Grab The Wheel” on June 28th, which follows the successful release of my single “Superhero” and the accompanying comic book “You’re My Superhero,” These projects are particularly close to my heart as they celebrate everyday heroes and the power of resilience. Also the Official Music Video for Grab The Wheel is out now. Here’s the link https://youtu.be/czFcI75dx74?si=TU10hOU4XdlzK9BA
Throughout my career, I’ve been driven by a desire to create music that not only entertains but also inspires and uplifts. My goal is to continue making a meaningful impact through my art, whether it’s through live performances, personalized acoustic renditions, or other creative projects. Living between Sydney and the US, I aim to build a life that allows me to pursue my passion while staying connected to my roots.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to where I am today has been anything but smooth, but it’s those challenges that have shaped me into the artist I am. One of the biggest struggles has been navigating the ever-changing landscape of the music industry. With the rise of digital platforms, the way music is consumed and promoted has drastically changed, and staying relevant requires constant adaptation and innovation.
Another significant challenge has been the financial aspect. Pursuing a career in music is often a labor of love, and there have been times when making ends meet was incredibly difficult. Investing in recording sessions, promotional campaigns, and touring can be financially draining, and there’s always uncertainty about the return on those investments.
On a personal level, moving from Australia to Los Angeles was both exciting and daunting. Leaving behind my family and friends to chase my dreams in a new country came with its own set of emotional hurdles. Building a support network from scratch in a city as vast as LA was challenging, but it also pushed me to grow and become more resilient.
One of the most difficult periods was when I moved back to LA in 2021. I slipped and fell at a coffee shop, tearing all the muscles in my left arm, injuring my spine and left hip, and experiencing daily vertigo. I couldn’t sing or play guitar, and even breathing was hard as I tore all the muscles around my left rib. This injury was a major setback, both physically and emotionally. It was incredibly frustrating to be unable to perform or create music, which are such integral parts of my identity.
Before moving to LA, I spent five and a half years living in New York. My time there was a whirlwind of activity, mixing live sound, performing every other weekend, and constantly being in and out of different studios. I had the opportunity to sing on other people’s albums, produce, and participate in numerous writing sessions. While it was an incredibly enriching experience, it was also exhausting and required a tremendous amount of perseverance.
Balancing creative integrity with commercial viability has been another ongoing struggle. Staying true to my artistic vision while also creating music that resonates with a broad audience requires a delicate balance. There have been moments of self-doubt and questioning whether I’m on the right path, but those moments have also led to introspection and growth.
Despite these challenges, each struggle has taught me valuable lessons and made every success that much sweeter. The support from my fans, the recognition from industry peers, and the personal satisfaction of creating music that I believe in have made every hurdle worth it. These experiences have not only shaped my music but also my outlook on life, reinforcing the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and staying true to oneself.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As an artist, singer, songwriter, musician, and producer, my work spans across various facets of the music industry. I specialize in creating music that blends heartfelt storytelling with compelling melodies, often drawing inspiration from my personal experiences and the world around me. My style is a fusion of genres, primarily rooted in pop and acoustic, but with influences from rock, soul, reggae and a little jazz. This versatility allows me to connect with a diverse audience and keeps my creative process dynamic and evolving.
One of the things I’m most proud of is my ability to create music that resonates deeply with listeners. My single “Lying Through Your Teeth,” which was nominated for a HIM award, is a testament to the power of authentic storytelling. Additionally, my recent releases, including “Superhero,” “Living The Dream,” and “Grab The Wheel,” have received heartfelt responses from fans, which is incredibly rewarding. The accompanying comic book “You’re My Superhero” is another project I’m particularly proud of, as it celebrates everyday heroes and the power of resilience.
What sets me apart from others is my holistic approach to music and my commitment to authenticity. I’m not just a performer; I’m deeply involved in every aspect of my music, from writing and producing to performing and promoting. This hands-on approach ensures that every piece of music I release is a true reflection of my artistic vision and personal experiences. My background in mixing live sound and working in various studios has also given me a technical edge, allowing me to bring a unique perspective to my productions.
But I can also show other artists, musicians, and creatives how to leverage powerful tools to enhance their music careers. There are innovative platforms available that I use that provide independent artists with essential tools to establish their business infrastructure and achieve financial freedom from their music. These platforms offer features like unlimited keyword automations, social media scheduling, and generative sales funnels, making it easier for artists to manage their online presence and marketing efforts. Here are the amazing platforms I use. GoalGetters: https://goalgetters.ai/-?am_id=katytunbridge1037 and Music Hustler: https://fanexploder.com/order?am_id=katytunbridge4843)
Additionally, these are fantastic solutions that help musicians amplify their reach and grow their fanbase. These solutions offer comprehensive tools for email marketing, merchandise selling, and Spotify song analysis, all designed to help artists maximize their potential and income.
Also, I’ve had the privilege of helping fellow artists with distribution, music publishing, copyright, and online marketing. Supporting other artists in navigating the complexities of the music industry is something I’m passionate about, and it’s incredibly fulfilling to see their success.
Another factor that distinguishes me is my resilience and adaptability. The challenges I’ve faced, from financial struggles to personal injuries, have only strengthened my resolve and deepened my connection to my art. Living and working in different cities like New York and Los Angeles has exposed me to a wide range of musical influences and industry practices, enriching my craft and broadening my horizons.
Ultimately, what I’m most proud of is the impact my music has on others. Whether it’s through live performances, personalized acoustic renditions, or recorded tracks, my goal is to create music that not only entertains but also inspires and uplifts. The support and feedback from my fans are what drive me to keep pushing boundaries and exploring new creative avenues.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was surrounded by different styles of music, thanks to my beautiful Mum and Nan (grandmother). Music was a constant presence in our home, and we’d always sing songs together. My mum and I would often go for drives along the beautiful Northern Beaches of Sydney, where I grew up, with the radio blasting as we sang along. Those drives are some of my fondest memories.
I started playing guitar when I was 8 years old. Initially, I learned to play the keyboard, but I got in trouble for not reading music and instead playing by ear. My passion for music was evident from a young age, and I was fortunate to have a family that supported and encouraged my musical pursuits.
My nan was a great storyteller. She would use different voices and get all animated, which I believe influenced my interest in voiceovers. We’d often do voices together, or I’d call her with some story in a different voice, pretending to be someone else. One of our favorite games was when I’d call her claiming to be Tracy from Pizza Hut with a pizza delivery. She’d play along, even though she hadn’t ordered a pizza, and we’d both end up in hysterics. These moments of laughter and creativity were incredibly special to me.
Even though I loved music and creativity, I was a very serious child in many ways. I was observant and thoughtful, always asking questions and trying to understand the world around me. My curiosity and desire to learn were strong driving forces, and I often found myself pondering the “why” behind things.
My Mum and Nan were huge supports in my life, always encouraging me to pursue my music and dreams. Their belief in me and their unwavering support have been instrumental in shaping who I am today. They instilled in me a love for storytelling, creativity, and music, which continue to be central to my life and career.
