Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Perlstein.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story started when I was at the University of Alabama with a major is Restaurant Hospitality Management. I wanted to get into event planning…wedding planner to be exact…until I came back to reality and realized that was not the life for me. Sticking to my major, I did my internship at a local bar as a “runner” for bands. As a 17/18 year old in college, making a couple hundred dollars a night driving the band members around, getting items off their rider, driving the bus driver to the hotel, etc wasn’t too bad of a gig. After I graduated college, I went back to Birmingham to help run a music venue. I would work with my boss on the promoter side of things during the day and bartend at night. At the end of the night I would settle up with the bands and be on my merry way. I learned a lot from working there, but when my boss sat me down to discuss a raise, I cried. I knew if I took the raise, I would never get out of Birmingham. So what did I do? I moved my ass as far away possible with the most opportunity. My parents and I packed up my car and my mom and I made our way out to Cali. I made this decision without having a job in place and a plan to find a bartending job until I found what I was looking for, stay out there for a year, and figure out what was next. I ended up living there for NINE YEARS. I was very lucky to get an interview with a talent agency in the Tour Marketing Department where I spent a year working in music and comedy. I got to learn and meet a lot of amazing people. After that, I went to a VIP ticketing company for 5 or 6 years where I worked very closely with the CEO and Founder. Toward the end of my time there, I started to realize this was not what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I knew I loved the marketing side of the music industry, so I started reaching out to some of my connections and interviewing. I was constantly told I did not have enough experience. So how was I supposed to get a job when no one would take that chance on me? So I said F it and did it myself. I started taking courses and attending webinars online, I found a place called General Assembly in LA where you could take in person classes and I signed up for Photoshop courses and social media courses. Through taking a social media course, I met my now mentor and Dose of Social business partner, Lindsay Mauch. I started to teach myself everything I could about social media and slowly started to sign on my own clients as a freelancer. I would say after about a year, I started to sign on some bigger more corporate clients and knew this was going to be bigger than freelancing….and that is when Goldenbird Marketing was born. Today, we have been in business for 8 years, we have an amazing roster of clients, a great team, and I couldn’t be happier.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Hell no it was not a smooth road. I think I was told NO more times than I was told yes. I left a full time job with steady pay to take a chance on myself. I had no business background and had to figure everything out as I went. Most of the time I was flying by the seat of my pants! I also think what a lot of people don’t realize or understand about entrepreneurship or building and owning a business is that it can sometimes get lonely. Don’t get me wrong, I have an amazing family, amazing friends, and a great network of likeminded people…but they won’t always be with you on the late nights and weekends when you are grinding it out.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Goldenbird Marketing?
Goldenbird Marketing is a marketing company that specializes in Organic Social Media Marketing. We help small to medium sized businesses with brand awareness and community building. So what does that mean?
Organic SMM means we don’t do anything on the Digital Marketing side. We don’t run ads, build websites, handle SEO for your website, build out email funnels, etc. We do all of the things that most business owners don’t have the time to do. We create your content, write your captions, schedule your posts, handle your engagement, help build your online community around your brand or business, etc. We work with both service and product based businesses, but we specialize more on the service side.
What sets us apart from others is our customer service. I am the Founder and I am very hands on with my clients. They know that I am always available to them and I like to make sure they ALWAYS feel heard.
I think I am most proud of where we are as a business right now. I have come a very long way as a business owner. I have learned from my mistakes and I take the things I have learned and use them to make me a stronger leader. Where we were and how we did things 3 years ago is so different now, and it is really cool to see.
To all of the readers out there, if you are interested in Social Media Marketing services, I would love to connect!
What were you like growing up?
I was born in New Jersey and grew up in Alabama. Talk about a shift! My parents always laugh when they talk about the time my brother and I started talking with little southern accents. Growing up I was a huge tomboy. When we moved to Alabama, all of the friends my parents made, who are still some of their best friends today, all had boys either my brother’s age or my age….and I felt left out a lot. I remember my mom telling me if you can’t beat them, join them. And I did.
