Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsea Tomczak.
Hi Kelsea, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I always wanted to be a veterinarian. I was that odd child that was always outdoors catching any animal that I could catch whether that be lizards, snakes, or frogs. Once I grew up and realized how expensive and time-consuming going to vet school would be, I decided I would go to veterinary nursing school instead. I graduated and shortly after became licensed. It wasn’t long before I realized that the veterinary industry was not what it seemed. The hours were incredibly long, the pay was much less than desirable, and the work was mentally and physically taxing. I quickly decided that the vet clinic life was not for me. I knew that I wanted to stay in the veterinary world because of my dedication to making sure animals got the best care possible. I was scrolling through jobs posted on LinkedIn when I came across a familiar name—PetDesk. Petdesk is a company based out of San Diego, CA that was offering remote work. I applied and thankfully got the job. I am now a sales development representative doing my best to make sure pet parents get their fur babies the best care possible. I am very thankful for my background and knowledge of the veterinary clinic world because it helps me relate closely to the clinics that I sell to.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would love to say that it has been a smooth road but it definitely has not. Veterinary nursing school was far from easy. Veterinary nurses do everything from bedside care, to x-ray and ultrasound, to anesthesia. We also learn everything there is to learn about 7+ species that cannot tell you their symptoms. Graduation thankfully came quickly and I was very excited to go on and pass my national board exam. After I decided that I did not want to work in vet clinics anymore, I went through a period of thinking I had wasted 6 years in school. I started to question what I was going to do with my life. Thinking like that is never fun.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work as a sales development representative for PetDesk. Petdesk is all about enhancing patient connection, streamlining communication, and helping vet staff have more time dedicated to patient care. I call vet clinics all over the country and let them know how much PetDesk can help them out. I know and understand how much it can help because I have been on that side of things myself. I’m best at relating to the receptionists in vet clinics, hearing their struggles, and doing my best to get them the help that they need. I am proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone and going into a sales job knowing absolutely nothing. I am also very grateful that I am still in the veterinary industry.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The veterinary industry needs a lot of work to say the least. Staff members are extremely underpaid and not respected by the public. The veterinary demand is skyrocketing but there is no compensation for employees. I hope to see veterinary nurses treated better within the next 5-10 years. I also hope to see more clinics adopting technology, like PetDesk, to help lighten their workload.
