Meet Kenessa Surratt of Unique Sole Styling Firm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenessa Surratt.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My love for shoes began at the age of three. I remember watching the Wizard of Oz with my Grandmother and seeing how Dorthy’s red slippers were able to transform her entire life. I too wanted that same feeling and asked my Grandmother for a pair of ruby red slippers. She ran out and purchased me a pair and that feeling has stuck with me ever since. I immediately grasped the concept of how shoes can truly transform a person’s attitude, self-worth and also take them places.

My vision for Unique Sole began as a freshman in college. I moved to my college dorm with about 35 pairs of shoes and quickly realized I did not have enough room for such a large number of shoes. I knew I would be buying more due to my love for shoes and decided to sell them to my friends. I would “open up shop” on the weekends and basically had a mini shoe store in my dorm room.

The idea grew and grew and I became more fascinated with the shoe industry as a whole. After college, I knew I wanted to own a shoetique and become a stylist. However, not just any stylist. A personal shoe stylist with a focus on shoes only. I found that through my passion, I would be able to help others feel the same way I felt as a child when I put on my ruby red slippers.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being that I am the first and only entrepreneur in my family, the road has not been smooth. I started from ground zero. Researching trade shows, requirements of a successful business owner, and most importantly, how not to go out of business within the first year.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I never like to say I am lucky. I do like to say I am blessed. I am blessed to have a strong support system and village in my family, friends, colleagues, and complete strangers who turn into clients. These individuals deserve the credit because they keep me motivated and push me to aim higher and be the best business owner I can be.
