Meet Keona Gwinn of Nashville, TN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keona Gwinn.

Hi Keona, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
If you walked through my story, it would begin in the South by a family that poured love, faith, and resilience into me from the very beginning. My mother and father taught me strength through their sacrifices, and my older sister was one of my earliest role models. She was athletic, active, and always on the move so growing up with her meant you never missed out on life. Whether it was games, activities, or simply keeping up with her energy, she helped create a childhood filled with laughter, adventure, and memorable moments. Before I ever understood adversity, I understood family.
During my mother’s pregnancy, doctors discovered I would be born with Spina Bifida. They spoke in limitations and fear, making predictions about what I might never do. But my mother chose faith over fear and refused to let anyone write the ending of my story before it began. She believed I had purpose, and that belief became one of the greatest gifts ever given to me.
When I entered the world, I faced medical challenges immediately. Yet even as a newborn, I was surrounded by love, prayer, and determination. My family became my first example of courage. They did not raise me to see obstacles as the center of my identity, they raised me to know I was capable, valuable, and meant for a meaningful life.
As you continue walking, you would see a young person growing up in Georgia learning how to navigate a world that can underestimate people too quickly. There were challenges, moments of being doubted, and situations that required resilience early on. But those experiences built grit in me. Instead of allowing obstacles to define me, I learned to adapt, persevere, and keep moving forward.
Then you would come to one of the most life-changing chapters of my story. At 13 years old, I almost lost my life because of an allergic reaction to medication. Spending much of middle school in and out of hospitals exposed me to realities many people never see at that age. I saw children battling serious illnesses without strong family support, sitting in rooms alone, facing pain and uncertainty with no clear place to turn. That experience changed me. It gave me compassion early, gratitude for my own support system, and a desire to one day serve people who feel unseen during their hardest moments.
Then you would reach my academic journey. Education became one of the ways I honored the sacrifices my family made for me. I graduated in the top 10% of my high school class, proving early on that determination can outwork doubt. Later, I attended Tennessee State University, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Biology, graduating cum laude. That season of life sharpened my discipline, expanded my perspective, and showed me the power of consistency through the challenges of COVID, while also navigating the loss of my grandmother, someone who always encouraged me to write my autobiography and use my voice to speak about disability and perseverance growing up.
The path then led me into purpose in Nashville, where I continued my education and earned my Master of Public Health in May 2026 at Meharry Medical College. My passion for advocacy, accessibility, and community impact grew stronger as I realized how many people are overlooked by systems meant to serve them. “Worship of God Through Service to Mankind” is a motto that will continue guiding me far beyond graduation. My faculty gave me opportunities to engage in research, grow as a leader, and learn how to create impact for underserved communities. I knew I wanted to be part of meaningful change.
Keep walking, and you would see me face another challenge: finding my voice. Public speaking once intimidated me, but I chose courage over comfort. Standing on a TEDx stage became one of the proudest moments of my life because it symbolized growth, healing, and confidence.
Today, the road continues through Adaptability Beyond Limits, the platform I created to shift the narrative from disability to adaptability. Through speaking, storytelling, entrepreneurship, and service, I hope to create impact and inspire others to see strength in their own journey.
If you walked beside me now, you would see someone still growing with humility and gratitude. My story is not about labels, it is about faith, family, perseverance, and using every chapter of life to build a legacy that helps others believe they can rise too. My personal quote is that “I wasn’t born with a disability; I was born with an adaptability”

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, and some of the hardest parts of my journey were the struggles people never fully saw. Growing up, I often felt different from those around me. I was sometimes bullied at a young age for standing out, especially being the only child in my class using mobility aids. That kind of experience can make you feel isolated before you’re even old enough to understand why. There were also emotional challenges that came with constantly being compared to what others considered “normal.” At times, I had to build confidence while navigating spaces that were not always inclusive or understanding. I faced moments of self-doubt, loneliness, and the pressure of wanting to fit in while also learning to embrace what made me unique. Beyond that, I’ve had to overcome grief, setbacks, and seasons where life felt heavy while still trying to succeed academically and personally. Balancing pain with perseverance is something many people don’t see. But every obstacle shaped me. The bullying taught me compassion. The isolation taught me self-awareness. The barriers taught me resilience. And the challenges that once tried to break me became the same experiences that built my voice, purpose, and strength.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a public speaker, content creator, and entrepreneur who has learned to gracefully navigate life with Spina Bifida while redefining what strength and success can look like. What began as a personal journey of overcoming barriers has grown into a mission to change the narrative around disability through adaptability.
For much of my life, I understood what it felt like to be underestimated or viewed only through the lens of limitation. Rather than allowing that to define me, I chose to create a new story one centered on resilience, confidence, and impact. That decision led me to step into spaces that once intimidated me, from public speaking stages to leadership rooms, and use my voice in ways I never imagined.
Today, my work lives at the intersection of storytelling, advocacy, and entrepreneurship. I specialize in motivational speaking, authentic content creation, and building platforms that empower others to embrace who they are. Through every speech, video, and business endeavor, I strive to make people feel seen, inspired, and reminded that obstacles do not have to determine outcomes.
Service is also a major part of my journey. I am committed to volunteering and community impact, serving on multiple advisory boards where I help create change and elevate disability voices. Through advocacy efforts such as Disabled to the Front, I work to expand inclusion and nightlife opportunities for people with disabilities. I have also had the honor of being a co author and publishing an op-ed with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on diversity, equity, and inclusion, and ringing the bell for the Nashville Rotaract Club. In May 2026, I will graduate with my Master of Public Health degree, concentrating in Maternal and Child Health.
What I am most proud of is transforming adversity into purpose. Moments that could have discouraged me became the fuel that pushed me forward. From delivering impactful talks to building a brand rooted in empowerment, I’ve proven to myself that adversity can become an advantage when paired with vision and courage. Adversity is a universal part of the human experience, but it does not have to be the end of the story.
What sets me apart is that I don’t just speak about perseverance I embody it. My work is shaped by lived experience, faith, and a commitment to helping others discover the power within their own story. I want people to leave any room I enter believing that limitations can be challenged, voices can be amplified, and adaptability can change lives.
