Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin McCoy.
Hi Kevin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a young child, I would snag my parent’s vinyl records in my room. I would imagine those songs were mine; learning the lyrics like I was in a co-write. From there, I would stage a show… walk this way… across the stage… put my hand up here, etc.
Then, I would pretend to perform on a huge stage right there in my room! It was my escape from real life. My happy place! Later in life, I went to a performing arts school. This is where I caught the bug & fell in love with performing for people. In my teenage years, I performed at the Grand Ole Opry.
That is when things got real. But, sometimes life gets in the way of your dreams. Recently, I have gained a mentor in Nashville, TN. Who has really opened my eyes to the Music Business! So, I am currently plugging away doing my thing the best way I know how!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Good Gravy, NO!!! When I started out I called every single venue, bar, and honkytonk around. Calling the kewlest ones and biggest ones first, of course! I never heard from any of them. I reached out to “bookers”, agencies, contests… you name it!
Nothing… until they heard me perform. Then, the clubs were opening up their calendars! We want you back every other week… yada yada! It was the business of music that was killing me! However, I found Jason Wyatt with Nashville Artist Development University and doors started to open.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a full-time artist. I currently play locally and regionally wherever I can. I am the founder, lead vocalist, and frontman of the Kevin McCoy Band. I play acoustic guitar. I write and co-write songs for myself and other artists around Nashville, TN.
I am most proud of my two singles that hit the TOP on Music Row CountryBreakOut Charts this year. I wrote a song with Jason Matthews that went to 64 called “Moonlight”. Plus, “Blue Collar” written with Mason Douglas climbed to 46!!
I say what sets me apart from other musicians is that I have a 4.6-octave range, on a good day! Haha! Also, my diverse style… a little rock, little R&B all wrapped up in the country!
We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is different for everyone. Hell, success has changed for me over the years. Matter of fact, success is changing every time I hit another bucket list goal!
I want to open for national artists… DONE. I want to be on the radio DONE. I want to chart on the radio… DONE! I want to headline festivals/fairs… DONE! I guess success is like beauty. It’s in the eye of the beholder!
