Kiara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m 25 years old born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. I thank God for my gift and ability to bless others with my talent. I did my mother’s makeup for her birthday and she looked absolutely stunning. She expressed to me deeply how she felt beautiful and was impressed with my skill.
She told me that I could really make some money if I offered services. Before then, I was just passionate about perfecting my craft and only painting the canvases of myself, friends, and family around me. I thought about my mother’s comment and about how many others I could bless and make feel empowered after being serviced by me. I got to work focusing on my brand.
In 2019, my freelance makeup business Gennae Glitz was born. Gennae Glitz was founded on the ideals of empowerment and inspiration. I wanted to inspire others to embrace their natural beauty, and enhance what is already there!
I have since expanded my brand from natural makeup to natural beauty. I am a self-taught freelance makeup artist & Natural hair braider currently servicing the Greater Nashville & West Tennessee areas.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I truly believe that God gives his hardest battles to his strongest soldiers. I have faced so many losses, trials, and tribulations on this journey on both a personal and business level.
So I guess you could say the road has had its bumps along the way. I’ve learned that you have to adapt and keep pushing through adversity. Gennae Glitz has been my constant and keeps me going through it all.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Gennae Glitz is all about enhancing your natural beauty! I am a freelance makeup artist and natural hair braider. I specialize in Natural Full Face Makeup applications and Natural Hair.
I offer two makeup services; the Mini Glam, and the Natural Glitz. My hair services include braid downs, starter locs, loc retwists, men’s styles, sleek extended pony, frontal wig installations, soft faux locs, and box braids. I go into full detail about each service on my booking site.
What sets me apart from others is that I take pride in natural beauty. I care about the wellness and health of my clients, their skin, and their hair. I believe in purpose over profit. Being able to service clients is a blessing to me, and I’m grateful to have the ability to bless and empower others.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice for small business owners and entrepreneurs is to never give up! The journey isn’t easy and can make you feel like quitting is the answer when juggling your business and personal life. Social media has the ability to make this journey look glamorous and easy.
In reality, it’s not; it takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and late nights when growing your business and clientele. Also, stay true to yourself and your brand, because your talent and work will speak for themselves. Just remember to be patient with yourself, and the process.
One thing I wish I knew before starting my business was how hard running a business actually was. I’m blessed to have found something I’m passionate about so it doesn’t feel like work. I’m thankful that I’m tech-savvy, and enjoy creating content, but being your own personal assistant, and doing it all alone can be tiresome, but possible!
I’m learning the art of balance, and to set boundaries so that I am able to pour into my business and myself.
