Meet Kiersten Rummell of Franklin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiersten Rummell.

Hi Kiersten, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been writing music ever since I can remember! When I was five, I started taking piano & voice lessons and performed throughout the school. I joined every choir & ensemble possible, led worship in school chapels and at my church, and performed in every musical. Anything involving music, I wanted to be a part of. I always knew I wanted to be a musician, but I discovered I wanted to be a songwriter in high school. Once I realized that I only had one school in mind: Belmont University. They have one of the most renowned songwriting programs globally, and ever since I first heard about it, I knew I wanted to go there. So I took a leap of faith and only applied to one school. In May of 2020, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Belmont University with a Bachelor of Arts in Song writing. Such a dream come true. Now I am writing songs in Nashville every day and loving every second of it.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road to pursuing songwriting. Graduating during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic was a big struggle. I was on spring break when I found out I would be finishing my last semester of college online. During this time, so many of my friends & co-writers moved back home, and hardly anybody in the music industry was taking meetings or co-writing. I felt like any momentum I had gained while in school was gone. But I didn’t let that stop me. I got plugged in with ASCAP & NSAI and started doing zoom writes every day. I also joined an online mentorship program through GrammyU to continue meeting mentors in the business. This year I have been able to get back to in-person co-writes, writing every day, taking meetings, and playing writer’s rounds!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a songwriter in Nashville! I co-write 5 days a week, working with other artists, writers & producers in town. I usually write pop country, singer-songwriter & indie pop, but I love to write for most genres! I also produce demos & sing vocals for other people’s music. I write with up-and-coming artists for their new singles/ albums and am currently pursuing a publishing deal. I have also written for a few sync projects, getting song placements in films and even an amusement park show in China! Every writing is such a unique experience, which I love about songwriting.
One of my proudest moments in this business was getting to play in the 30th annual Tin Pan South Songwriter’s Festival this year. It is the largest songwriters-only festival, with people coming from worldwide to attend and perform. I was so honored to have been selected to play. It is truly a moment I will never forget! I am also thrilled to currently be featured on “NSAI’s TOP 40 Songs” list and on their “One’s To Watch” list, alongside so many talented songwriters.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have had so many amazing people who have helped me get here and continue to encourage my goals! I have so many people who have been a part of my journey, starting with my amazing & supportive family, who have always encouraged me to pursue God’s calling in my life. My parents, Scott & Terry Rummell, are my biggest cheerleaders and have invested so much. They never told me I needed a “plan b” – they have always believed in me & supported my dreams in countless ways.

I am so appreciative of all of my teachers, coaches & directors I had growing up, who gave me countless opportunities to perform, write and figure out that I wanted to write music for the rest of my life. A few include Greg Curtis, Diane Reynolds, Tim Hosman, Megan Carvale, Daniel Vu, Pam Hansen & Chelsey Everhart.

I am so grateful for all of my professors at Belmont University, who were honestly so much more to me than just professors. They were some of my biggest fans who cared about me and my future. They taught me so much about the craft of songwriting & the music business, but they also taught me how to stay true to who I am and trust God’s perfect timing. They were amazing, but a few of them include Liz Hengber, Cindy Morgan, Drew Ramsey, Mark Maxwell & James Elliot. I also had such amazing mentors through Belmont & GrammyU, who include Jacee Badeaux, Laura Reed, and James Waddell. I am also so thankful to my ASCAP reps, Holly Chester & Kele Currier, and my NSAI member rep Nora Hanna for championing me & my music, giving me so many incredible opportunities, and setting me up with some of the best co-writers ever!

I am so grateful for all of God’s people in my life to help me live out my dream and write music every day.
