Today we’d like to introduce you to Kinsey Ranee
Hi Kinsey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I fell in love with fashion at a very young age. Growing up shy, I learned to express myself through what I wore. I would reinvent myself through style, falling in love with the process and endless opportunities. My professional styling career started when I left my hometown outside of Houston in 2017 to pursue my dreams of becoming a stylist at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. I’ve always been a very determined person and took on any and every opportunity (good and bad) that came my way. My first “break” I would say was on set of Vogue where I assisted one of the fashion editors at the time for their LA cover story. I remember being in awe of watching all the pieces come together to tell a story. I was hooked. From there I began to freelance assist with top celebrity stylists around the city working on looks for anything from Oscars performances to press tours to editorials , eventually landing my own September cover with Byrdie styling Thuso Mbedu.
After spending almost 6 years in LA, I craved change and a new environment. I guess you could say you can take the girl out of the south but you can’t take the south out of the girl because in 2023 I decided to make the move to Nashville. I am now signed to The Only Agency locally while also traveling to New York and Los Angeles for the best of both worlds. I have had the honor to work with many artists and labels here and still love the process of seeing a vision come to life. In addition, a huge passion of mine is bringing creatives together through hosting events such as at Soho House Nashville. Nothing compares to building community and collaborating with creatives.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Styling is its own beast. There have definitely been many struggles and even times where I thought I was going to quit. There is no real set path with this kind of career, so I really had to learn as I went and make it my own. I have a degree in marketing, but the business side has been an accumulation of lots of trial and error for me. Most people don’t realize how much goes on behind closed doors of the fashion industry. It is a lot more than just putting pretty looks together or shopping. This industry is all about relationships and who you know. Its a bit of magic and a whole lot of grit. While I have had a fair share of Hollywood horror stories, I have also met incredible people and mentors I will take with me throughout my career. The highs have been high and the lows have been low, however the community and storytelling are what keep bringing me back.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I always describe what I do as telling stories through style. For me it’s all about authenticity- who is in front of me and what are we trying to portray. My goal is always to make clients feel comfortable in their own skin. I want to make every person who steps into a fitting with me feel like themselves but better. Styling is a true collaboration. I would say I have an unexpected approach to styling that mixes both city and southern cultures. I love to meet people where they are to help radiate confidence from the inside out.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I am a HUGE podcast person. I am obsessed with the Who What Wear Podcast as well as Let’s Get Dressed with Liv Perez. For mindset, I love listening to On Purpose with Jay Shetty and Cleaning Up The Mental Mess with Caroline Leaf.
I also have been really loving the Notion app to keep me organized with projects and am always on Pinterest for inspo.
