Today we’d like to introduce you to Kira Wolfe.
Hi Kira, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born & raised in Nashville, TN by Nashville’s illustrious celebrity Makeup Artist for over 30 years, JK Hunter. Growing up, the semesters were spent in Nashville going to multiple MNPS schools such as: Robert E Lillard Design School, I.T. Creswell Arts Magnet Middle School, and Nashville School Of the Arts. While my summers and holidays were split between traveling to West Tennessee to visit my grandmother, and traveling to New York and Connecticut to visit my Dad’s side of my family. Having the privilege of exposure to multiple regions and ways of life gave me a deep appreciation for the differences and nuances in people and ways people think. It piqued my interest in learning how to mesh my love for performing arts, entertainment, and business for healing and self-expression. So, I decided to explore a college major that I felt merged all of these entities together. Among my research, I found the Arts and Entertainment Management program in the Lubin School of Business at Pace University located in New York City’s Financial District. Fortunately, despite the COVID-19 Pandemic, I was still able to graduate in December of 2020 and walk in a joint commencement ceremony in May of 2022.
Since relocating back to Nashville after being in the Northeast for about 7 years, I am now utilizing all of the tools I’ve learned along the way to go full force with my YouTube channel, simply titled Kira Wolfe, written and audio content, Hair & Makeup content curation, newsletters, other entrepreneurial goals, and apparel that will be coming soon. Nashville is a hidden gem full of real people who understand quality over quantity, and I am excited to see how I can contribute to the evolution that has already been unfolding in this beautiful city I call home.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has most certainly been a road of many twists and turns, nothing has felt linear during this process. And that was part of what made it more of a struggle: the resistance to constant change made the feeling of growth uncomfortably ridged at times. Being that my years were split between so many different realities, every time I felt I was getting comfortable in one or the other, it felt like a rug was being yanked from under me right as I was getting my footing. This caused an array of mental health struggles that added another element to my journey of self-expression. These challenges got so severe during university that my grades began to be affected. Amongst all of the external and internal noise attempting to convince me I should not push forward or I am not worthy of better, I decided I would be the change I wanted to see in the world. The resources for deep healing were available to me through the counseling center at Pace University, so I took full advantage and joined group therapy. Then, one of my friends introduced me to a meditation app. I practiced yoga. I started journaling in many different forms: audio, video, and physical journaling. So many people allowed me to cry on their shoulders. All of these outlets and obstacles helped me grow through the pain of the past.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in Creative Curation for Hair and Makeup, as well as content creation. I started my YouTube channel in 2014, and have come back to the platform as a means of expression of my many interests throughout the years. In addition, I also have the keen ability to reverse engineer any puzzle presented to me in order to find a solution. My ballet teacher at Nashville School of the Arts, Mrs. Debra Perry, always said, “Apply the corrections,” and thus, I took that lesson and applied the corrections throughout my life, not just ballet class. I trained my mind to take note of every detail of every experience leaving me with a loaded tool belt full of lessons. Any room I enter or project I collaborate on, I am equipped to assist in a multitude of ways because my expertise is broad, upgrading and elevating any aspect or element of the process I encounter. However, I would say I am most known for my personality. I am quite silly and love to tell corny jokes to anyone with a listening ear. I used to be afraid to embrace it, but I recognized now I have a helpful heart and an aura that feels like home no matter where I am or who I’m with. I have a way of making people feel safe to be their most authentic and honest selves, which is something I am definitely most proud of. My dance with change has made me fall in love with newness, which keeps me curious about life at all times. I have explored the depths of my darkness, so I am not afraid of the darkness in others, and I think that sets me apart because it makes me brave. Bravery shows acceptance, and people crave acceptance and connection. I know I do.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was exactly how I am right now: bright, energetic, kind, helpful, brave, goofy, honest, and a leader. My mom might say, “A busy body and a lot to handle,” because I loved learning about any and everything, always asking questions. Here in Nashville, I was a part of many advanced groups of students and I was blessed to test high enough to get into the GATE program, for Gifted and Talented Education, formerly known as Encore. This exposed me to higher level learning, comprehension, and development of my critical thinking skills. Artistically, I was always in dance, acting, orchestral, vocal classes, and after school programs like, W.O. Smith Music School here in Nashville.
In addition to my formal education, my mom, JK Hunter, was training me daily on the ins and outs of being a self made entrepreneur. She would bring me with her everywhere she went, whether that be to the Tennessee State University Theatre Department to work on many plays including The Colored Museum, David Lipscomb’s Theatre Department to work on The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, or the Grand Ole Opry to lead a team of makeup artists, hair stylists, wardrobe stylists, and barbers for the Stellar Awards. It taught me how to be organized, kind, and assertive while handling business.
Things I enjoyed on my own time were watching Disney Movies, YouTube videos, and other comedic content. My love for film and individuality sparked my love for platforms like YouTube because I finally saw an avenue for expression where you can choose how you wish to express yourself; People weren’t bound to the expectations of the entertainment industry. I had no idea content creation would be an occupation now, but I owned my own pink camera and camcorder, and would record myself speaking and telling stories. I was always finding ways to make the day more dramatic. Whether that be changing the way my scarf is thrown around my neck 20 times or dancing everytime I pass a mirror, which I still do. As a child I lived in my own universe, walking, always, to the beat of my own drum.
