Today we’d like to introduce you to Lil Timme.
Hi Lil, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Courtney “Lil Timme” Buchanan, born in April 1979, in Nashville, Tennessee, was destined to make waves in music. His roots trace back to early mornings and late nights at the piano, which he began playing at just eight years old under the guidance and inspiration of his mother. Raised by two loving parents, his family home was a sanctuary of rhythm and sound, where gospel and soul echoed daily, laying a foundation for what would become a legendary career. By the age of 10, Lil Timme gave his first solo performance at his parents’ church, and by 13, he was regularly playing in church services—a powerful testament to his dedication and passion.
Lil Timme’s gift earned him a place at the prestigious Hillsboro High School for Performing Arts. After he graduated, he joined The Sophisticats, an elite music group known worldwide. With them, Lil Timme became a main performing artist, headlining shows across London and the Virgin Islands, captivating audiences with his raw talent and undeniable stage presence.
In collaboration with legendary DJ Lil Less, Lil Timme produced “Hanging with the Hustlers”, a powerful, gritty record that sold over 20,000 units and solidified his future success in the music world. His first solo album, Timme’s Touch What’s Next, dropped 25 years ago, marking a pivotal moment in his career. Since then, he has written over 75 songs, with more than 60 commercially released, becoming a true gem of the Southern rap scene.
Throughout his career, Lil Timme has worked behind the scenes as well, stepping into the role of Production Manager at WrldEnt, where he honed his skills on both sides of the microphone. He’s collaborated with gospel artist, Montrell Darrett, as an organist, served as an opening act for Moneybagg Yo, Cap G, and more recently tagged as Co-Headliner for Hip-Hop legend “Project Pat”. Performing on stages for Jannis Live in Tampa Bay, Florida, to Nashville’s famed Exit in, The Joy Theater (New Orleans), Minglewood Hall (Memphis), and the White Oak Theater (Houston). His extensive performance history includes headlining the Stoner Jordan Tour, rocking the stage at the Miami Best Life Festival, and leading crowds at the Detroit Block Party.
In 2024, Lil Timme added another milestone by headlining the Loud on the 7th Music Festival. His dedication to music extends beyond performing; he is also a proud co-owner of DacypherCLT. From church to international stages, Lil Timme has built a career that is as diverse as it is impactful. Today, he continues to inspire and shape the industry, forever leaving his mark as one of Nashville’s most enduring and influential entertainers.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say that it definitely has not been a smooth road. I’m not one of those artists that made the hit song and it went all the way to the top fast. It’s more like the artist Nipsey Hussle said, “It’s a marathon.” We have to run and keep running and keep running. There’s so many artists, rappers, and producers. It costs so much to be in this profession and become recognized by the music world as a contributor to the art. So I would say that the struggles are not really struggles. The struggles are really just the reality of the business. You can never quit! The moment you quit will be the moment of a breakthrough.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the Entertainer, Lil Timme.
I specialize in making music for the people. I’m known for being a musician.
If there is a proudest moment, that moment will be now. I live in the world where “now is all we have” -Eckert Tolle. This space allows for me to not have a biggest moment. This is what sets me apart from my colleagues of rappers, producers, and entertainers. I tend to not focus on any moment, but right now, the present. So right now, I’m proud of what I have achieved up until today. Tomorrow, there will be an even bigger moment. Even this moment with you, sitting here having this interview with you is my proudest moment. In 2024, every interview I did cost me on the average about $500, and I’m sitting here with you right now because you’re looking for Nashville’s hidden gems and I’m one of them. Now I’ve made my way to a place where I can be recognized as one of the hidden gems. That’s a proud moment, so I appreciate this interview even more.
What are your plans for the future?
I would say my life goal is to create a space for this generation to create work for themselves. I wrote a song, “Motivation”, that was handed off from the idea written in a book from Robert Kisaki, author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Kisaki says that we go to work all of our lives for money, but we never make that money work for us. I believe that if we make our money work for us, whether it’s through savings, investments, or working on a 9-to-5 job, make that money work for you. Then, you will make a long-term commitment to the success of the Earth.
The song I wrote, “Motivation” says “let nothing take my time, always working on a better way, count money in my sleep, make that money work for me, motivation.”
My motivation comes from my mom and dad working so hard, but always only paying bills and taking credit card vacations. My motivation comes from watching my aunt and my uncles struggle all of our lives and not being able to do this and that. Well, my future plan, (if there is a future plan, because I live in the now) is to fix the generational health to create generational wealth, and create ways to sustain, scale and document these ideas into reality for family generations to come.
