Today we’d like to introduce you to Maddie Mahon.
Hi Maddie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After my freshman year of college, I faced self-doubt and confusion about my academic path and interests, turning more introverted that summer. Seeking a creative outlet in August, I got into jewelry making using supplies at my godmother’s place.
Having learned basic techniques at a young age, I recalled her teachings. With just a bit of my knowledge & some online tips, I decided to try my hand at making a pair of earrings. I grabbed some big silver hoops (from my jewelry box) and jazzed them up with hand-wrapped crystals. The positive response from friends and family led to requests, prompting the inception of my hobby into a business.
From one order to another, I established an Instagram page in August (2019), and upon returning to school in September, I entered Rowan University’s Rohrer College of Business to enhance my marketing skills for East Coast Jewels. Active in the entrepreneurship program, I expanded my presence through social media, local craft shows, and a website.
Fast forward nearly five years, East Coast Jewels is a thriving online business, reaching international orders. I create unique pieces inspired by my coastal hometown, incorporating the beauty of the beach into my brand. My goal is to celebrate the art of handmade jewelry, crafting pieces that empower individuals to express themselves.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Running a business at 19 while juggling school and work has been a journey filled with ups and downs. It’s been all about trial and error. One major challenge has been battling self-doubt, especially in a world where people are always asking about your plans. I’ve questioned whether my business could truly succeed or if it was just a fleeting idea. Thankfully, it has become a source of confidence and self-discovery, pushing me to step out of my comfort zone and express my true colors.
Jumping into business at a young age, I didn’t have a clue about the intricacies of running one. It’s been a learning process, from understanding business legalities and navigating taxes to managing finances. These aspects have been significant challenges, but they’ve taught me valuable lessons about the practical side of entrepreneurship.
Time management is another struggle. Being an entrepreneur means handling multiple tasks simultaneously, which can be overwhelming. From planning craft shows, making & managing inventory, working part-time, and completing school assignments, to making time for loved ones – it’s a constant juggle. Yet, it’s a challenge I’ve learned to navigate, understanding that effective time management is crucial in this entrepreneurial journey.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I wear many hats – business owner, jewelry designer, marketer – you name it! My focus is on crafting unique and handmade jewelry, specializing in earrings and a small selection of necklaces. I work with high-quality metals, crystals, freshwater pearls, and natural gemstones, meticulously hand-wiring each piece. My creations range from glamorous and wedding-inspired to dainty, bold, and vibrant.
Among my favorites are the chandelier earrings, featuring a larger styled dangle adorned with beautiful iridescent crystals. What makes me most proud is the dedication to my craft, drawing inspiration from my hometown, and the joy people express when wearing my pieces. What sets me apart is the personal touch; each design is a product of my passion and commitment.
Every piece is crafted by my hands, and I’m a firm believer in pursuing your dreams with heart and determination. If it’s something you desire, go for it!
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe courage and determination are crucial. It can be challenging to expose your creations and yourself to others’ opinions.
Yet, having the courage to believe in yourself, set goals, and see them through is key. I often repeat the cliche saying, “Find something you love to do and call it work,” and I apply this philosophy to my business journey.
