Today we’d like to introduce you to Maddox Fowler
Hi Maddox, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in the heart of the south just outside Atlanta, Georgia. Growing up in a family rich with musical and creative talent, my childhood was steeped in artistic pursuits. My father, a singer-songwriter, and many other musically talented family members fostered an environment that had tons of creativity. At an early age, I was either in the studio with my dad, on stage at a Collective Soul concert with my uncle or playing drums at church on Sunday morning. This undoubtedly shaped my interests and aspirations. From a young age, I was captivated by the power of visual storytelling. I have always felt alive chasing God’s beauty, whether it’s the sun rising over the ocean or the sun setting over the mountains. From the emotional impact of a photograph or the lingering feeling after watching a compelling film, I knew I wanted to create something that could evoke similar reactions in others. When I reached my early teens I picked up a camera, the tool I needed to capture these moments and craft narratives through images.
My passion for visual arts was complemented by my love for extreme sports. From skateboarding and snowboarding to dirt biking and surfing, I found excitement and inspiration. Naturally, I began documenting my adventures, creating travel videos and other visual pieces that allowed me to blend my interests in sports and storytelling. High school further fueled my passion when I enrolled in film classes. They became the highlight of my day, providing a space where I could fully immerse myself in the art of filmmaking and refine my skills. After winning several awards, I knew I was on the right path.
After high school, I had the incredible opportunity to apprentice under Mil Cannon (Imagemil) at Jan Smith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. Mil Cannon is an award-winning director and photographer known for his collaborations with artists such as Carrie Underwood, TLC, Usher, Mariah Carey, and P!nk. Working with Mil was an invaluable experience. My first professional shoot, after graduating, was for the amazing Carrie Underwood. I then found myself on set every week, absorbing knowledge and gaining hands-on experience in various roles, from Director of Photography (DP) to Grip to Director. This opportunity was instrumental in honing my craft and solidifying my desire to pursue a career in visual storytelling.
After enjoying a fantastic couple of years at Jan Smith Studios, I was offered a full-time role as a Videographer and Photographer for Grammy-winning artist Zach Williams. I embraced the opportunity and embarked on a full-time tour at the end of summer 2021. This took me to Nashville, Tennessee. Each day on tour, I woke up in a new city with fresh moments to capture through my lens. I quickly adapted to the challenges of touring full-time. It was a thrilling experience to document Zach and the band, and I will always cherish the memories from my time there.
Today, I work full-time as a video director and photographer in Nashville. I also get to travel creating content for a variety of artists on the road. It’s an honor to work with today’s top industry labels and entertainers. Establishing wonderful relationships with artists and industry peers has been a great privilege. My motivation and purpose comes from my faith in Jesus. My goal is to illuminate His light in all my work for everyone to see.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My work journey has been incredibly rewarding. I find inspiration in tackling challenges that obstruct my progress towards my goals.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
