Today we’d like to introduce you to Madeline Crawley
Hi Madeline, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2018, I set out to create the boho macrame backdrop of my dreams for my wedding. I had no idea what I was doing but I’ve always been artistic and creative and felt confident I could figure it out. After countless videos and blog tutorials, I created my very first macrame piece: an 8 ft. long boho macrame backdrop of my dreams. During that process, I quickly realized not only did I enjoy it, but I was also good at it! I then started making a few pieces here and there for friends and family, nothing serious. In 2020, my husband and I moved to Foley, Alabama where I was working a terrible job that was sucking the life from me. I impulsively signed up for my very first market at Foam Coffee in Gulf Shores, Alabama in November 2020. No business name, no plan, just me and some macrame. This experience encouraged me to land on a business name and create my business Instagram page that I launched end of January 2021. After a year of selling just on Instagram and at markets, I launched my website in July 2022. In July 2023, we moved back to the good ol’ state of TN where my husband and I were both born & raised!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think for any creative being, it’s never a smooth road. Mix in the struggles and pressure that come from social media and we’ve got quite the beast to tackle. I’m lucky enough to have not experienced any life altering, heart breaking struggles… unless you count your artwork shattering on your garage floor, then yes.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I pride myself on all parts of my craft. From the selection and quality of my supplies to the care and detail I put into each piece. I have coined the term “hand-tied goods” to describe my work and my brand. Ivory Jane Goods is also the home of bleached macrame and chunky macrame pumpkins! I also specialize in unique and intricate wall art, functional décor and accessories.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I wouldn’t say that I have a mentor but the people you surround yourself with is hugely important. It’s hard to put yourself out there and be vulnerable, but so many rich things can come from it when you do. Don’t be afraid to try something new and surround yourself with people who believe in you.
