Meet Madi Hendry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madi Hendry.

Hi Madi, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello! I’m a 19 year old singer/songwriter from a small town just outside of Nashville. I am the middle child and have two brothers, which means that I grew up playing with dirt trucks and getting muddy in the creek beds behind our house. My music journey started at a very young age. My dad would play me songs that he and his friends wrote on his guitar instead of the standard lullabies, and this led to me wanting to learn how to play the guitar. After a couple of months of guitar lessons, I just started singing, which led to songwriting. I taught myself piano after that, and music got me through the rough middle school, early high school years. In 8th grade, the advanced choir at my school took a trip to Nashville to record in RCA Studio B and sing at the Country Music Hall of Fame. That trip was so educational, exciting and eye-opening. The following Summer (summer before my freshman year), I signed up for a songwriting camp at the Country Music Hall of Fame and learned a lot about the music industry. That week was the week I realized that songwriting was what I wanted to do with my life. I have spent the last four years honing in on my craft. In January 2021, I released my first single, “Born To Be.” I have continued to release three more singles since then and just announced that my debut EP will be releasing on November 19th. I am currently majoring in songwriting and minoring in music business at Belmont University in hopes of becoming an artist full-time while writing for other artists as well.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. But God has continually shown me that this is the path He wants me on. I struggled my first two years of high school with friends and school, but the summer before my junior year I was a camp counselor for my church and met some of the best friends ever. This led to feeling called to transfer to my rival high school, where they were all at school. When I transferred, I got plugged into the phenomenal choir program at my school and had my best friends surrounding me. Those beginning years of feeling alone, uninspired and confused about what I wanted to do with my life led to a refreshing, wonderful couple of years where I could work on music and be content socially.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a professional songwriter, writing my own music as well as music for others. As an artist, my genre is pop/country, but I love to write in every genre. I am an independent artist and do all my own booking, copyright, royalties, promotion, etc. This has lead me to acquire knowledge across all fields and develop an appreciation for all aspects of the music industry. I started working with my producer, Oscar Pennell, about two years ago and we have been making music together ever since. I released my first single in January 2021, followed by three more over the next coming months. I am releasing my debut EP on November 19th, which I’m so excited for because I have been working on this project for about 1.5 years. Currently, I am working on getting more gigs as well as beginning the production of my 2022 project, my debut album. I am devoted, ambitious, hard-working, creative and passionate about the music industry and finding my place in it. I am most proud of the fact that I always got back up when I fell down. When I get uninspired, I remember the stage and the end goal. I hope that my music makes people feel like they are not alone in this world and give a voice to the voiceless.

What does success mean to you?
This is a funny question because I have written a song about how people define success in different ways. For me, I want to look back on my life one day and be happy with what I see. That would be my ultimate definition of success; to be content with the life I made. This would consist of marrying my special someone, having kids, receiving a publishing and/ or record deal, winning a Grammy and selling out a big event venue. Some big (little in the grand scheme though) successes I hope to achieve semi-soon are playing the Bluebird Cafe and CMA Festival. I would love to sell out shows all around the world and still have a family with a “home base.”
